Free Book: "Radical" by David Platt

The folks over at WaterBrook/Multnomah are offering a free book: no shipping, no strings attached. The book is available while supplies last until May 9th. I downloaded a e-book copy for my nook, but hard copies are also available.
Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream

In the book Radical, author David Platt challenges Americans to consider how we may have tweaked the message of Christ to fit our cultural preferences. It sounds like an interesting read, and I am ALL about the free. Check it out if you would like. You can also sample the first chapter or watch a video concerning the book.

"Total Transformation Tuesday" Sneak Peek

I'm excited to announce a new twelve week blog adventure starting next Tuesday, May 11. "Total Transformation Tuesdays" will document my 90 day journey to transform body, mind, and spirit. Fair warning: it may turn into "What Was I Thinking Wednesday," or "Throw in the Towel Thursday."

Here's the gameplan:

For 90 days I commit to improving the the following areas of my life:
  • Body:
    • Exercise: P90x to be exact. I'm probably a little bit delusional to think that I am prepared for that level of fitness insanity, but I'm up for the challenge. I will do my best and forget the rest.
  • Mind:
    • I will commit to read for at least thirty minutes a day. Unfortunately, this will not include reading the program titles on the TV guide channel.
  • Spirit:
    • I will be reading Beth Moore's study "90 Days to a Heart Like His" based on the life of David.

Let's be honest here, I'm in a bit of a rut. I need something to motivate me to get off my tail and get something productive done. I figured there is no better motivation than a couple hundred people to hold me accountable. I'm telling you on the front-end that the odds are good that at some point I'm going to want to give up. Don't let me!

I invite you to follow me on my journey. I promise to be completely honest with you on how things are going. I'm not going to pretend I've got it all together if I don't. Here's my motto:
"Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing."
I'm not going to be perfect, I can tell you that much, but I do want to strive for excellence. I'm excited (and a little apprehensive), but I think my goals are realistic and my motives are good. So many times in the past I have been motivated to change because I wanted to please someone else. Since reading Beth Moore's latest book "So Long Insecurity," I've come to recognize the foolishness of the people-pleasing game. Other people's opinions do not give me self-worth - God does. This is for me.  I want to be a healthy, happy momma. I want to make the most of the gifts God has given.

I'm pumped up and ready to go! Tuesday, here we come!

Tasty Baby: Tasty Dreams Organic Brown Rice Review

I wish I had the time to make all of my son's food, but busy schedules and sometimes sheer exhaustion keeps me from achieving this goal. That's why I'm so thankful for companies like Tasty Baby who create healthy, organic options for infants and toddlers. It gives me great peace of mind to know that I'm feeding my child nutritious, beneficial food. The folks at Tasty Baby are pioneers in the organic food industry, and for you eco-friendly moms out there, Tasty Baby has taken great strides to care for the earth as well.

Here's what they say on their website:

GREEN IS TASTY

Since Tastybaby feeds the very people who will inherit our planet, we feel that it's our privilege (and our duty!) to do what we can to preserve and restore the health of the Earth.

Tastybaby Organic Whole Grain, Gluten Free Brown Rice Infant Cereal with DHA, ARA & Prebiotics, 7-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 6)I had the opportunity to try Tasty Dreams Brown Rice organic infant cereal with my son.  I love that this cereal is gluten free and loaded with healthy prebiotics to aid in digestion. Tasty Dreams is formulated to be eaten before naps or nighttime. It is designed to promote relaxation and muscle building.

Tasty Baby cereals are certified USDA organic and are also rich in DHA and ARA which is essential for healthy brain and eye development. I also love that the cereal comes in an eco-friendly resealable bag.

I noticed that the flakes are a lot fluffier than other brands I had tried and they dissolved quickly and smoothly when liquid is added. My son seemed to enjoy it!

Tasty Baby also offers a line of organic purees and organic snacks.
Tasty Baby products have been featured on The View and Life & Style Magazine. You can find their products on Amazon.com, Whole Foods, Krogers, etc. Locate a store near you by clicking here.

They are also promotional partners of the new film "Babies" that is opening in theaters this weekend, May 7. They are hosting a great giveaway in celebration of that event. You can win a prize package valued at over $80. You can find the entry information here.

Rethinking Mommy's Little Helper - 20/20 Special

I'm not sure if anyone else saw 20/20's recent special entitled "Mother's Little Helper." The program featured moms who use alcohol to cope with the stresses and issues of motherhood. I was intrigued by their stories, and it got me thinking that there are probably more moms struggling with this issue than people care to imagine or admit.

I grew up in an alcohol-free home. My parents didn't drink, nor did any of my immediate family members. In fact, I had never tasted wine until I studied overseas in college, and even then it was as part of a church communion service. (My church back home always used good ole Welch's Grape Juice.) I think since I wasn't exposed to it as a child or young adult I was less likely to partake in it even when I had reached a legal drinking age.

And yet, as a busy stay-at-home mom, I can understand the temptation to find something to "take the edge off." That's why I've committed not to ever have alcohol in my home. Not because it is some sort of inherent evil - plenty of people are able to drink responsibly and appropriately. I choose not to allow it in my home because honestly, I don't know that I trust myself. I can see how easy it could be to allow one drink to turn into two.

Let's face it. Raising kids is one of the most challenging jobs out there. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to spend all day playing with play dough or cleaning poop off of a child's clothes, but it does take inordinate amounts of patience, consistency, and love. And if we're being honest, a lot of times, this hard work is not even acknowledged or appreciated.

The good news is there are alternatives to drinking. There are ways to relieve stress at the end of a day that do not involve things that impair your abilities or judgment. Consider the following:
  • Exercise:
    • I know, I know . . . I probably hate it as much as you do, but I find that it does so much to improve my mood and relieve stress. I notice a big difference in my perspective and attitude when I take care of my body.
  • Meditation:
    • Take some QUIET time each day to tend to your thoughts and emotions. Dwell on a scripture verse or devotional thought to focus your mind and deal with your issues. Prayer can be a huge part of this as well.
  • Journal:
    • Write down your woes in a journal, BUT for every one negative see if you can find something else to be grateful for.  I've learned that you will find what you are looking for - if you focus on the negative, you will see the negative; if you focus on the positive that is what will draw your attention.
  • Vent:
    • Girlfriend, chances are you are not the only one struggling. There are moms just like you across the country (and the world) that are facing similar stresses. Sometimes it's good just to tell someone else what a bad day you're having. Don't have a girlfriend nearby? There are hundreds upon hundreds of mommy blogs and forums that you can participate with!
  • Set aside some "Me" time
    • Put it on the calendar and protect it. Go to a coffee shop. Get a massage. Lock your bedroom door and read a book (I know some moms who lock themselves in the bathroom for at least 15 minutes a day just so they can get a chance to take a breather). Your mental well-being is critical to your family. You are worth the investment
  • Find a support system:
    • Check your local newspaper for parenting groups or playgroups. I'm active in my local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). I can't begin to tell you how beneficial it is for me to get out of the house and spend time with other moms. I know that if I have a problem I can call on them for help.
You are so worth it. Your children are worth it. On those days where you want nothing more to numb the pain, disappointment, and stresses, know that this is only a season of your life. One day you will no longer have to scrape melted crayons off the inside of your dryer or pry gum out of someone's hair.

If you do have a problem don't be afraid to seek help. There are hundreds of other women going through the same thing. 20/20's website has a few resources that can help. There are links to an Alcoholic's Anonymous Quiz you can take if you think your drinking has gotten out of hand. There is also information on places you can go to find help.

"Sixteen Cities" CD Review

I'm one of those weird people who always needs background noise in my house - sometimes it's the Hallmark Chanel, sometimes it's the radio. For the last week, the self-titled release from Sixteen Cities has been my soundtrack. Their debut album released a couple weeks ago and I have really enjoyed it.

Sixteen Cities is a Christian rock group originally from Portland. They actually started playing music together while in high school. They traveled on the Indie circuit for a few years before joining with Centricity Music.

My favorite song on the album has to be "Pray You Through." Here are a few lines from the Chorus.
I'm all out of words,
there's nothing I can say to you,
To take away the hurt
so let me pray you through.
Some of their mellow songs remind me of Death Cab for Cutie; while others are a little bit more upbeat and reminiscent of Jars of Clay and The Fray. On occasion I think their lead singer, sounds a little bit like the singer from Copeland. Their lyrics were thoughtful and their melodies memorable. They do have a "younger" sound, but I think that people of any age can appreciate their music.

Check them out!
