An Honest Christmas Letter

You know how everyone sends out Christmas letters about their families talking about everyone's special accomplishments and achievements during the previous year? I've been tempted to write an every-day "real life" Christmas letter for my family. It would go something like this:

Merry Christmas from the Brooks Family!

Sarah, former valedictorian and summa cum laude graduate with a double major in Mass Communications and Christian Studies/Missiology emphasis, spends most of her time wiping bottoms and preparing meals (although not necessarily in that order). On special occasions she takes a shower before noon AND fixes her hair and puts on make-up.

BJ works full-time and takes masters level classes part-time in the evening. He is also an amazing dad to two little boys, which means he is super busy from sun up to sun down.

Ben loves to eat cookies and candy, spin in circles, and color on the wall behind mommy's recliner. Sometimes he listens to mommy and daddy, and sometimes he doesn't, it depends on whether he wants to or not. He has a fun personality and is full of energy.

Andrew is our newest arrival. He gets a kick out of watching Ben run around. He dislikes every green vegetable but loves sweet potatoes. He has a sweet smile and laid back personality, a perfect balance to Ben's exuberance and strong will.

All kidding aside, I have the world's most precious family, and I am blessed beyond words to get to be a full-time parent. I just love my Brooks boys. We may not have a whole lot of accomplishments to speak of, no big honors to brag about, but I'm thankful for this stage of life.

Maybe one day I can say that my children are all on the Honor Roll and are the star athletes in their sport of choice, that I have a novel on the bestseller's list, and that my husband just received a doctorate; But, the things we do right this second are special too. They may not get a lot of "glory," but they matter (trust me, people would notice if I stopped changing diapers). They may not be impressive, but they are important.

I have to remind myself regularly, that what I do as a stay-at-home mom is significant. I'm investing in my children's future; I'm providing a safe place for my husband to rest and be renewed; I'm making our home a place of refuge and security.

Sometimes I have to put some of my own dreams and ambitions on hold for a while to tend to other people's needs. I may not be teaching orphans in a foreign country, but I can teach my sons that God loves them. I may not reach a broad audience with my writing, but I can share my thoughts through my blog and through Facebook. I no longer have any impressive accomplishments of my own -no prestigious awards or sought-after titles . . . I take that back. I'm a Mom, and if that's not a well-earned and accomplished title, I don't know what else is.

Each November we gather as a family to share what we are thankful for. Tonight as I was tucking my two-year-old into bed we talked about what we could thank God for. He listed off the expected things: mommy, daddy, books, friends, and then he caught me a little off guard. He said, "Dear God, thank you for God. I don't see Him, but He's nice." My little boy is just learning how to put sentences together. Each day his vocabulary grows a little bit more. I love to see the boy he is becoming. He's no longer the same little baby I brought home twenty-seven months ago.

What am I thankful for? My family, my friends, my home. I'm also thankful for a God who is nice, even though we can't see Him. My little boy mentioned that God doesn't fall down either. It's a good reminder.

Fantasty vs. Reality

Have you ever wished you were "that" mom? You know, the one who appears to have it all together. Perfectly manicured nails, stylish hair, perfectly applied make-up. Fit and ready to face the day. Maybe your version of "that" mom prepares organic meals from scratch for her children. Or perhaps "that" mom has a spotless home and well-behaved children. I'd like to welcome you to a not so perfect place called "reality."

This is what my mornings would look like in my fantasy world:

6:00 AM - Wake up to a quiet house. Fix myself a cup of hot tea and nestle down in my sun room for morning devotional reading. Pray, reflect, relax and savor the moment.
6:45 AM - Exercise
7:30 AM - Shower, get dressed, put on make-up, fix my hair.
8:00 AM - My delightfully cheerful children request permission to get out of bed. They happily eat what I put in front of them. And then read quietly for the next hour.
9-12 AM - Fun activities with my children: crafts, reading books, playing at the park.
12:00 - I would serve a highly nutritious lunch, incorporating both fruits and vegetables.
1:00 -3 PM Ben naps
3-4 PM - More playing with the children.
4-5 PM - Prepare a delicious and nutrition meal for my family from scratch
5:30 PM - Serve dinner, get everything cleaned up. Enjoy an evening of family time.
7:30 Ben and Andrew go to sleep
7:30-9:30 - Hang out with the husb
10:00 PM Go to Bed.

Reality:

I wake up three times in the middle of the night to attend to a teething child.
6:00 AM - Husband gets up with the two-year-old in order to help with the sleep I lost getting up with the 6-month-old the night before.
7:30 AM - I am awakened by a two-year-old standing next to my pillow saying "Gick up Mommy, Gick up. ("Get up" for those of you not fluent in toddler speak).
7:45 - Change child's diaper, get him dressed. Turn on Netflix.
8:00 I lay on the couch in a groggy stupor (thanks to the 4 hours of sleep I had the night before) while my oldest watches PBS.
8:15 AM - The baby wakes up and needs to be fed, changed, and dressed (I'm still in my pajamas.)
10:00 AM - I remember that I haven't eaten breakfast and that I'm quiet hungry. So I grab a handy packet of my son's gummy fruit snacks (They have 10% fruit juice in them, so that should count as a serving of fruit).
11:00 AM - Surf around the web on Facebook or Pintrest while Ben plays happily with his toys.
12:00 - Heat up a hotdog for Ben. (Ketchup is a vegetable, right?) Son refuses to eat what I fix for lunch and demands cookies instead. Cookies are denied resulting in a kicking and screaming tantrum.
1:00 - Lay Ben down for nap.
1:30 - Take a shower if Andrew is content and finally get dressed for the day (which usually entails a t-shirt and jeans). If I'm lucky, I'll have enough time to blow dry my hair. I don't even bother with the make-up since I won't be leaving the house today.
2:00 - Surf the web while Ben continues to nap.
3-5: Watch Super Why, Sesame Street, or Fireman Sam
5 PM Heat up a frozen dinner.
6 PM Pile the dishes by the sink with the promise that "I'll clean them later"
7 PM Bathe the kiddos; get their jammies on.
7:30 Lay Ben down
8:00 Try to find the motivation to do the things I've put off all day long.
9:00 Facebook or Pintrest while hubby does schoolwork
12:00 - stumble into bed around midnight depending on when I'm able to get Andrew to sleep.
1:30 - Wake up and attend to an upset teething child.

Rinse and Repeat.

I suppose the frustrating thing for me is that my "Fantasy" is full of obtainable goals and activities. I feasibly COULD do all of those things in the day, but most of the time I don't. It's not that I don't have the time or opportunity, it's that I lack the motivation. I often choose to do "other" things, usually things that are of no value or worth.

At this stage in my life, sleep is as valuable as gold, primarily because it's such a rare commodity. So the likelihood of waking up before my kids get up is slim to none. I'm not going to wake up at 5 AM especially since I don't go to bed until 1 or 2 AM.

I'm just not "that" mom. I don't have it all together all the time. My house is routinely in a state of disorder. I don't always take care of myself physically or spend a lot of time on my appearance. Most times I forget to pluck my eyebrows until I'm in the car and get a good look at myself in the rear-view mirror.

The majority of the time, I'd rather spend an hour on Pintrest than clean out my closets or wash my dishes. I guess I'm normal, but there's always that temptation to compare myself to other moms. I like to think that they have it all together, but I have the sneaking suspicion that there is no such thing as a "perfect mom" or a "perfect wife."

My main thing is that I know that there are things that I can do better. As a recovering perfectionist, I've learned that it's OK not to do everything perfectly. I don't have to be a perfect mom, but I'd like to do better. I'd like to do a better job of taking care of myself, both physically and spiritually. I'd like to do a better job of taking care of my house and family. It's a gradual process which will take a lifetime to improve on.

I think I'm going to try to find just ONE thing to work on this next month. To try to change everything at once would not be realistic. So, I've decided I'm going to eat breakfast every day. I'm going to sit at the table with my Bible and enjoy some tea and toast. Slowly but surely my fantasies can become reality.

Ten Tips for De-cluttering and Organizing Toys

Toys are a little bit like rabbits. They seem to multiply in dark corners and they make a tremendous mess. Ok, but seriously, keeping the rooms in our hose clutter free can be a bit of a challenge. My son's toys seem to creep up in every room of the house. I've even found them in my shower and under my bed. So how do we keep this toy tide under control? Here are my top ten recommendations for de-cluttering and organizing toys in your own home.

Buy some baskets or buckets to help keep your kids stuff contained.
Clean out the toybox. If you child hasn't played with the item in the last two weeks consider rotating it out. Chances are they won't even notice that it's gone (that is, if they don't see you removing it, if you are caught in the act, they will claim that that toy is their most prized possession).
Make your organization age appropriate. For younger kids consider placing a picture of what needs to go in the bin on the outside of the container. Even toddlers can understand this basic concept. Cars go in the container with the car picture on them, blocks, books, etc.
Think outside the box. I turned an old entertainment stand into a toy center in my sons room. All of his toys are now contained in an organized space. It helps his room seem cleaner and it eliminates the cluttered feeling.
Re-purpose items. I saw a mom who used those magnetic kitchen strips used for knifes to store her sons hot wheels. The magnetic strip held the cars in place and kept the organized and off the floor.
Encourage your child to go through their toys themselves. Make a family trip to a shelter or donation center and explain how the toys that we're tired of can really be special to someone who doesn't have any toys. It can be a good learning experience for all involved, and can help keep the greedies under control.
For every new toy that comes in, one needs to be rotated out. This helps keep the room being overwhelmed with toys. Before you bring the new item in, encourage your child to select one toy to remove. It may be an item that they've outgrown, or one that is broken. Placing a toy limit helps keep things from getting out of control.
Consider selling some gently used items on e-bay or in a garage sale. Sometimes if kids can "earn" the money from the sale it can encourage them to part with the item.
Don't contribute to the problem. If you child doesn't need any more toys, don't buy them. Kids don't want us to buy their affection, they want us to spend time with them. In the long run, they won't remember every toy they owned, but they will remember quality time spent with a parent.
Create boundaries. It's ok to have a "no toy" space. For example, we keep toys out of the guest bedroom, so that it's clean and tidy for company when they come over.

There are several practical steps that you can take to help keep clutter under control. No one likes stepping on toys in the middle of the night. With a little bit of practice, you too can help you child keep the toys from overwhelming the space.

Mompact: Review and Giveaway of Little Looster Booster

I have two kids age two and under. I spend most of my day changing diapers. I dream of the day when my oldest is potty trained. We read books about going on the potty. We talk about going on the potty, but so far we've had no success. I've been looking into different potty products to help us with our potty-training endeavors. I recently had the opportunity to try the Little Looster and I'm a definite fan.

The Little Looster is a wraparound step stool that fits around the contours of the toilet. Unlike other step stools that may move or slip, the Little Looster remains in its place, and does not interfere with grown-ups who may also need to make use of the facilities. In my bathroom there is not a lot of space between the toilet and the door. I was initially concerned that there would not be enough room to open the door with the Little Looster in place, but it fit perfectly. I was able to open the door without any difficulty.

My two-year-old was able to easily climb up on his own. His feet did not dangle when he sat down, but they were able to rest securely on the Little Looster.

I would definitely recommend this product to parents. I love that the Looster Booster enables my son to use the "big potty" which means I don't have to spend time cleaning out a small potty (or trying to discreetly hide it when company comes over.) This is a great product for parents who are tight on space!

I give the product five stars: It's easy to use, easy to clean, and is a great resource for those with young children.

Does Becoming a Mom Mean Giving Up Your Dreams?

Is it possible to pursue dreams and motherhood at the same time?

I just finished reading the book Quitter by Jon Acuff, blogger of StuffChristiansLike.net. Why is a stay-at-home mom doing reading a book about quitting your day job to pursue your dream job? After all, I don't technically have a day job . . .well, not a paid one at least, and motherhood certainly is not a job that I could/would quit. So, why was I attracted to this book?

Plain and simple: I'm a dreamer.

The moment I took on the title "mom" the "Sarah" part of me didn't disappear. I still have a unique set of God-given gifts and abilities, and I believe they're there for a purpose. They exist to help me fulfill my dream. Acuff doesn't word it quite in this way, but I personally believe that each individual was created by God to fulfill a purpose. If you breathe on this earth, then you have a reason for living. I believe that our "dream" and our "calling" can be synonymous. Why would God give us talents and desires if he didn't intend for us to use them for His purposes? Our task is to unite our unique selves to the work we were created to do. Does that responsibility end when we become mothers? I think not.

Don't misunderstand me. Motherhood in itself is a noble and important calling, and for some people it may be their sole calling, and there is not a thing in the world wrong with that. I know that these children have been entrusted to me for a reason and God has equipped me with everything I need to be the best mother to these particular kids. However, I also believe that it's OK to pursue our dreams, our destinies (insert dramatic music here). To cultivate our skills and abilities- to set goals and have godly ambitions.

I don't claim to have it all together, but I have observed from my own personal experience that if I don't set attainable goals I will accomplish very little. I will remain in survival mode - accomplishing only what needs to be done to make it through to the next day. I think pursuing dreams and having a plan will actually enable me to become a better mother.

Kids grow up. They leave home (hopefully not to come back and live on your sofa). Then what? Although your children are yours forever, the amount of time that they remain under your direct influence is limited in the grand scheme of your lifetime. Who will you be when your children are grown and the days of 24/7 mom duty are behind you?

As a child, I always dreamed of becoming a published author. I spent summers scribbling in notebooks and reading every book I could get my hands on. This blog is, in part, a manifestation of that dream, but I still have so much to learn. There are writing workshops that I could attend, books I could read, lectures I could listen to. Am I progressing toward my dream of writing or am I putting it on hold until it's more feasible?

I may not have the time to sit down and write a 50,000 word novel at this stage in my life, BUT I can move toward that goal. I can learn. I can hone my skills and I can take steps in that direction. Motherhood may alter the course, but I'm still capable of taking that journey. If we wait until we "have the time" we'll be waiting for decades and we'll miss opportunities along the way.

We should never offer our children on the altar of our own dreams, but if you have the desire and the ability, don't be afraid to take that next step to put your dreams into action.

Pursuing our dreams makes us better mothers. It enables our sons and daughters to see that not only are we unique individuals, but that we can make a difference. So, whether your dream is to open a bakery on Main Street or to feed starving orphans in Africa, don't be afraid to take that first small step.

So, what's my point? Don't give up on your dreams. They are there for a reason. God has big plans for you.

"Young Love" Mat Kearney Review

Mat Kearney's latest release, Young Love just hit the shelves and has already flown to the #1 Top Digital Album's chart in its first week. Right now it's available on Amazon for only $4.99, definitely worth the price.

The hit single "Hey Mama" is probably one of my favorite tracks on this album. I find myself walking around the house singing "Hey mama, hey mama, hey hey mama." Which is appropriate because I usually have a two-year-old walking around saying the same thing.

It's a fun album from start to finish. Some of my other favorites include the more mellow "Sooner or Later" and the upbeat "Count on Me." For some reason the sound of Mat Kearney's voice makes me think of California. It's completely illogical, but for some reason his music makes me think of hanging out on the beach.

Young Love is a great album for enjoying relaxing summer nights or driving around town. With its positive message and upbeat rhythms, Kearney's latest release is a great follow-up to his previous two albums. "Route 66" by Krish Kandiah Review

Few believers doubt the Bible's ability to change their lives. The challenge for many is learning how to navigate the pages of Scripture in a way that impacts our everyday lives in a practical way. Understanding the unique nature and message of God's Word enables the individual to apply scripture and therefore make a difference in his or her everyday life.

Using the analogy of a road trip, Route 66 by Krish Kandiah provides the tools necessary to navigate and apply Scripture in a practical way. The book contains eight sections - "living faithfully, distinctively, poetically, discerningly, prophetically, infectiously, purposefully, and hopefully each provide an introduction to a different kind of literature within the Bible and follows with questions for discussion and five days of daily readings."

This book would be a wonderful resource for individual study or in a small group setting. The study can be completed in an eight-week time frame. The five daily readings are a great length, not at all overwhelming in length or in content. There are a total of 40 readings and a wonderful selection of discussion questions. The author does an excellent job of making the readings accessible and understandable. It's a great resource for those seeking to navigate God's Word! Bring a friend along for the journey, this trip down Route 66 has the potential to impact your Christian journey.

Krish Kandiah is the Executive Director: Churches in Mission for the UK Evangelical Alliance. He is also an external examiner for Oak Hill College, an Associate Research Fellow at London School of Theology, and is part of the theme development group for Spring Harvest.

Dr. Kandiah previously held the position of Director of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, in addition to being Tutor for the Mission and Evangelism at Wycliffe Hall. He was also an Oxford University Theology faculty member.

Before becoming the pastor of a multi-cultural church in Harrow, Kandiah worked with students in the UK with Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship, and in Albania with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. He has wide experience in evangelism and cross cultural mission, and he is in demand around the world as a speaker and lecturer—though he is still a regular speaker at university missions and at Spring Harvest.

A Different Kind of Good

Every so often I go through college withdrawals. College was a good time. Friends lived literally just around the corner. There was freedom, there was fun, without all the full responsibilities of adulthood (mortgages, insurance, bills, bills, and more bills).

Of course while in college, I couldn't help but look forward to the "next" phase of life. Marriage, a family. No tests. No papers. Surely, that would beat the endless schedule of exams and lectures.

No stage of life is perfect. If I'm constantly looking ahead or behind, I'm bound to be disappointed with the present. As I type I have a two-year-old coloring at my feet and a sleeping baby on my chest. This is good. It may not be the same as 2 AM runs to Wal-mart with the girls, or outdoor concerts and activities on a college campus, but it is a time that I know I'll look back on and miss.

I've always been tempted to look back and say "those were the best days." Or anticipate the future (when kiddos will be out of diapers and old enough to take on responsibilities on their own) and think "I can't wait for that day to get here."

I know one day I'll miss rocking my babies, just like I miss things from different phases of my life. So, I should thoroughly enjoy this day, because it won't last forever.

I'm thankful that God doesn't leave us in the same place. We'd take it for granted. I'm grateful for the past, enjoying the present, and looking forward to the future. They are all a different kind of good.

"A Bug Collection" DVD Review

As the mother of a preschooler, I'm always on the lookout for wholesome, entertaining videos for my family. Although (before kids) I swore I was never going to be one of those moms who plopped their kids in front of the TV all day, I have learned that 30 minutes of entertainment = 30 minutes that I can use to accomplish all those chores that seem to pile up overnight.

"A Bug Collection" is a set of DVDs from Max Lucado's Hermie & Friends series. This DVD set includes: Buzby and the Grumblebees—it’s about bee-having, Haily & Bailey's Silly Fight—it’s about getting along, Milo, the Mantis Who Wouldn't Pray—it's about prayer.

Buzby and the Grumblebees is my son's favorite. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've watched it today.

I like that the series communicates positive values, including: the importance of behaving, learning to get along, and the importance of prayer.

They'd be a great addition to your home video library. They're great for the whole family!

"Pocket Purifier" Review and Giveaway

I've seen a lot of those "As Seen on TV" products recently. Have you ever wondered if any of them actually work?

I had the opportunity to try out the Pocket Purifier: The Handheld Germ Eliminating Light.

The device includes a 4 watt germicidal UV light. It's the same type of technology that a lot of hospitals use to steralize surgical equipment.

So . . . does it work?

Honest answer, I don't really know. I don't have the scientific equipment necessary to test and see if it kills the germs, but scientific tests have shown that UV light will kill any DNA-based organism with a large enough dose of UV and that the UV light breaks down DNA on a cumulative basis. It has been proven to be effective on the germs that cause the cold and flu virus, plus e-coli, mold, and fungus.

It is certainly easy to use. It just takes four AA batteries and is small enough to easily transport in your purse. I'm thinking this is a MUST have for dirty hotel rooms. Am I the only one afraid to touch the hotel remote control? All you have to do is turn the device on. Hold the UV-C light over the area that needs to be disinfected for about 10-15 seconds and voila - sanitized surface.

I tried it out on some of my kids toys. They say you can also use it on kitchen utensils, telephones, office equipment, bathroom products, etc. It certainly seems like a good idea - especially with flu season on the horizon.

It also comes with a built in flashlight which I think isn't completely necessary, but hey, maybe the lights go out while you're disinfecting . . . you never know, and at $20 or less it seems like a decent deal.

As a mom, I can definitely see the benefit in a product like this. It's potable, easy to use, and affordable. They are available at a variety of retail locations and online at their website www.purelyproducts.com

When you become a mom you naturally give up a lot of things. I remember after Ben started teething, I had to put all of my jewelry away. I wasn't sure that it could hold up to a toddler's tugs and pulls, not to mention the inevitable drool. It seems like everything goes straight into a baby's mouth, especially when he's teething.

Fast-forward a few months - A mom in my MOPS group had on a really neat piece of jewelry. Her little one was gnawing away on it without a worry in the world. This was the first I'd ever heard of teething jewelry, but it really is a brilliant idea.

I have the Zebra pendant and I was very impressed. It looks as if it is your standard, hard, jewelry pendant, but upon closer inspection it is a semi-flexible silicone. And to make things even cooler - these pendants can be washed to keep them clean and sanitary.

I love, love, love the "What's in the Bible" series from Tyndale and Phil Vischer. They are so exceptionally well done! I think I find them just as entertaining as the kids do. Ten Tips for Making Your Life Easier and More Efficient on the Go

I used to think I was busy . . . and then I had kids. The word busy now takes on a whole new meaning. That's why it's essential that I take any possible steps to make life a bit easier and more efficient as I go about my day. These don't have to be dramatic changes, but these ten simple steps can help lighten your mothering load.

Clear out clutter. Some people are hoarders. I'm the opposite. I get a thrill out of throwing stuff away. I think cleaning out closets is good for the soul. If it's been sitting unnoticed and unneeded in the dark recesses of your house, chances are, you don't have to keep it. It's amazing how much cleaner your house (and car) will become and how much lighter your spirit will be when you get rid of unnecessary belongings.
Get organized. Rather than having things scattered all across the room try to group like items together. In my living room I keep the remote controls for all our different electronic devices in the same little box. I keep all of my power/computer cords stored together. That way, if I'm looking for something specific, I have a good idea of where it is located. The same is true when you're on the go. Try to keep your car organized so that it's easy to find what you're looking for - whether that's a map (does anyone use those anymore) or your insurance card.
Clean out your purse. I am terrible about throwing a bazillion and one things into a bag and then never cleaning it out. It's so much easier to find things on the go if you make a habit of cleaning out your favorite handbag at least once a week. And who knows . . .you might find some treasures hidden in your bags. There's nothing better than finding forgotten money!
Have a plan. This is especially important if you are traveling with children. "Failing to plan is planning to fail." If you are traveling with young children, chart out necessary bathroom and food breaks along the way. This prevents you from "emergencies," which may be memorable, but certainly don't make your life easier.
Enlist help when needed. There's nothing wrong with enlisting a friend or family member to help you when you're on the go. My hubby helps get my little ones in and out of the car when we go to church. Although I could probably manage it on my own, it's so much easier to get a two-year-old and two-month-old in and out of the car safely with an extra set of eyes and hands.
Pre-packaged Snacks - You can either buy these pre-portioned snacks at the grocery store or you can save a little cash and go ahead an divvy out your snacks into smaller snack bags. This way when you need to be out the door, you can just grab a baggie and get on your way.
If you don't need it, don't take it. This one may seem a bit redundant, but I've learned what is essential and what is not. Sure, I should probably take an extra outfit for my kiddos, but they probably don't need two. It's trial and error for you to determine what your family really needs.
Do what you can ahead of time. If I'm going on a trip, I like to load up the stroller and accessories the night before.
Get a planner. Keep track of your appointments and plans so that you're not having to rush about at the last minute.
Download helpful apps for your smart phone. There is a plethora of helpful tools and apps that can help you when you're on the go. This can include everything from finding gas stations to finding clean, family-friendly restrooms. Take advantage of technology.

Ten Reasons I'd Like to Visit Virginia Beach

It's hard to believe that summer vacation is almost halfway over! When did July get here? My family just got back from visiting family in Texas last week. It was a fantastic time, but this warm weather has me wishing for a watery destination. Virginia Beach seems like a winner to me. Here are ten reasons I'd like to visit Virginia Beach:

1. My children have never seen the ocean. I'm surrounded by sand, unfortunately, it's because I live near the desert. We have the grit and the sand, but no ocean views. I'd loved for my land-locked kiddos to enjoy the beauty of the ocean.
2. I could use a romantic get-away. Everyone loves a romantic stroll on a beach. As the busy mom of two toddlers nothing sounds more appealing than sitting on a quiet beach with the husb. Ah, ocean sunsets. I think a girl could get used to that.
3. Can we build it? Yes, we can! Beaches are the perfect place to build a sandcastle. I would love to watch my family build a fantastic, sandy house. Of course, pretending to be a giant and knocking down a sandy city can be equally fun.
4. From Sand to Strawberries. You can visit Pungo and pick some yummy strawberries. This has definitely been on my to-do list. Too bad they don't have chocolate on hand. Chocolate and strawberries is one of my favorite food combinations.
5. Surrey Rentals - I did this once when I visited the Gulf of Mexico. It's fun to peddle this little Surrey around town. I think older kids would definitely get a kick out of being able to "drive" around town with the family.
6. Soaring above it all. My parents went parasailing in Hawaii a few years ago and said it was fantastic. I would love to give it a try. I'm not totally sure I can handle flying nearly 1,000 feet in the air, but it'd be worth a shot. I'm sure the views would be just beautiful.
7. Visit the Virginia Aquarium. My son loves all things fish-related. I would love to give him the opportunity to see his fishy friends up close. They also have an IMAX theater on site.
8. Expand Your Artistic Horizons - The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia offers instructional art classes for ages 2 - adult. I don't have a lot of skill in this department, but it'd be fun to admire the creative work of others!
9. Tons of Parks - The Virginia Beach area features several different parks. They'd be perfect for a picnic lunch or an afternoon of outdoor activities.
10. Food. Food. Food. I love fresh food. I'd love to sample some fresh seafood. Mmmm. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I'd love to just stroll along the Boardwalk sampling coastal cuisine.

I can't make it out there this year, but it seems like a great place to visit.

Encouragement is a Powerful Thing

Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word. Over the last few years, I've learned just how important it is to encourage one another. I think that we often underestimate the way our words impact those around us. Scripture admonishes us to "encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called today."Sometimes it's hard to think of practical ways to put this command into action. In my personal opinion, a simple hand written note of encouragement can make a tremendous difference to another person.

I had the opportunity to sample a collection of cards from Dayspring recently. They are a perfect resource to encourage the ladies in my own life. The "Sassy and Sophisticated" collection of cards are great for sending to your girlfriends. The colors are vibrant and chic, and most have a humorous tone to them. The cards are quite attractive, and the message inside offers a great pick-me-up.

Let's face it. Kids have a lot of stuff. More kids = more stuff. The challenge we face as moms is figuring out a quick and easy way to tell who things belong to. Zippies are a super cute way to quickly and easily identify a child's belongings. These collectible ID tags easily clip onto backpacks, jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, the possibilities are endless! There's a cute character on one side and a place for a name and phone number on the back.

They feature both an adjustable rubber loop and a clip that can attach to a key ring or loop in a bag.

I really like that they can easily attach to a water or soda bottle. This is great if you have to throw everyone's drink into a backpack or purse. It's easy to quickly identify which bottle belongs to which person.

10 Tips for Keeping your Family Safe on the Road

Summer is here. Soon families across the United States will be heading out on the roads for vacation. Even with soaring gas prices, it's hard to deny the allure of a family road trip. As millions begin their annual treks, it's important to keep in mind a few helpful tips for keeping your family safe on the road.

Don't over do it. I think it's definitely tempting to try to drive across country in the shortest time possible, but be aware of your own personal limitations. It might sounds like a good idea to drive for 14 hours, but driver fatigue can increase your risks.
Please don't text and drive. Please, please, please for your safety and the safety of the rest of us on the road, don't text and drive. No message is worth your life or worth the life of your children. If you absolutely must check your messages, pass your phone to a passenger or pull over to the side of the road.
Don't drink and drive. I would hope beyond all hope that you would know better than to drive impaired, but statistics show that large numbers of people do get behind the wheel after having too much to drink. Please be responsible and don't put the rest of us at risk.
Take regular breaks. If you've been on the road for a while, it might be a good idea to schedule regular breaks. Stretch your legs. Get a snack. Take a bathroom break. It'll help break up the monotony of the road and help you stay focused.
If you're sleepy, pull over or get a passenger to drive. Studies have shown that driving while sleep deprived can be similar to driving while intoxicated. If you feel like you're about to doze off, please pull off to a safe area and take a quick cat nap. If you're traveling with another licensed driver, take turns behind the wheel. One can sleep while the other one drives.
Keep your car well maintained. Before heading out on the road, make sure your vehicle is in proper working order. Be sure to take care of any chips in your windshield since they can turn into a crack at any time. Chip repairs are economical and quick and usually take just about 30 minutes. Some companies like Safelite will even come to your location to do the repair.
Drive defensively. The sad truth is that even if you're doing everything properly, it's still possible to get into an accident due to someone else's negligence. Be on the alert for other drivers. Please report any individuals who appear to be intoxicated or are driving recklessly.
Inspect your tires. Before your trip begins, inspect your tires for any signs of damage or wear. It'd be a good time to check your tire pressure (this can also help you get the best gas mileage).
Check your child restraints. If you're traveling with young children, check to make sure that their seats are secure and properly installed. The seat should wiggle from side to side when you pull on it. If you're not sure if your seat is installed properly, stop by your local fire station or police station. Most locations have someone available to check to make sure the seat is secure.
Travel with an emergency kit. You never know what you might encounter on the road. Be sure to travel with a fully stocked emergency kit. Include some non-perishable food, bottles of water, a flashlight, blanket, and standard first aid kit. It always pays to be prepared. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged before your trip in case of an emergency (just remember not to chat on it while driving!).

Your family is precious, so don't be in a rush. Take care of your precious cargo. Arriving ten or fifteen minutes early is not worth the risk of speeding or driving recklessly. There are many things that you can do to help keep your family safe on the road and reduce your risk. Drive safely and enjoy the journey!! Happy summer travels!

To be honest, sometimes I have a hard time remembering what life was like before the internet. It has become such an integral part of my daily life: everything from paying bills, to finding a recipe for dinner. My family decided to give up our cable TV several months ago, but there are definitely a few programs that I miss watching. I especially miss HGTV since moving into our new home!There are so many different cable/internet providers out there, I'm always interested to learn about what new products and services are available in my area.

Verizon FiOS is a leader in customer satisfaction for their television and internet services. Unlike coaxial cable or copper phone lines, their fiber optic network is reliable and weather resistant. No more frustrating weather-related interruptions or frequent pixelated screens. The fiber optic technology also means that your home is equipped to handle the latest new internet tools and applications that will be released in the coming months.

As a product reviewer, I'm always interested in how other individuals review a product or company. J.D. Power and Associates ranked Verizon FiOS "Highest in Residential Television Service Satisfaction in the East Region" for three years in a row. They were also ranked #1 in value, overall quality and customer loyalty according to the 2010 American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey for the largest subscription TV service providers.

FiOS also offers some pretty unique features, including Flex View. With Flex View you can start watching an on demand video title on your TV and then later finish it on your mobile phone or computer. I think it's really neat to be able to access your rentals and purchases on a variety of different devices.

Media Manager allows you to access photos, internet radio stations, music, and other media files on your PC. These can then be accessed from your FiOS enabled TV. This would be great for boring your neighbors with all of your family vacation photos. All kidding aside, it really is neat to be able to access your PC's media from your television. I would definitely take advantage of the internet radio feature.

For social media addicts, TV widgets enable you to watch TV and tweet using your remote control. You can even update your Facebook status to keep all your friends informed about your favorite programs. I'm usually on Facebook when the TV's on anyway, so I guess it's the best of both worlds.

Verizon also offers super fast internet which allows for clear streaming video and quick downloads. They've also won PCMag.com's People's Choice award for five years in a row. If you're not super tech savvy, there's also In-Home Agent, which helps you troubleshoot any potential problems you might have with FiOS or High Speed Internet services.

If you're in the market for a new Internet or Television provider, you might want to check out Verizon. They're not currently available in my area, but they might be in yours!

Five Summer Getaways Every Kid Should Experience

Most of us have fond memories of summer vacations from our childhood. Mom and dad would load us up into the car and off we'd go across the country on a great adventure. Of course, the trip would be peppered with the obligatory "he hit me" and "she's looking at me funny." Summer vacations are a great time to explore and bond with your family, and this country is full of fantastic places to see and explore!

Washington DC - Is your family on a budget? DC is a great place to explore a plethora of free monuments, museums, and locations of national interest. It's neat to watch the history books come alive in front of your kids. You can even take a peek at how the government works. Visit the Senate and the House, if you make arrangements ahead of time, you may even be able to swing by the office of your local senator (although it's pretty unlikely they'll be there). The Library of Congress is a definite must if your kids are readers. There are thousands upon thousands of books, including some pretty fantastic treasures.
The Grand Canyon - You may want to be a little bit cautious with this one if you have some daredevil boys in your family. They might be a little tempted to urge that annoying younger sibling a little too close to the edge after your eleven hour car ride. All kidding aside, the Grand Canyon is a phenomenal place of beauty, and can definitely be done on a budget. There are plenty of educational opportunities available, as well as some fantastic opportunities for some bonding in the great outdoors.
Dallas/Fort Worth - Ok, I'm a little partial to this one since it's where I grew up. The DFW area has some fantastic things to see and explore. Take in a professional baseball game with the Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington. Swing over to Six Flags for a fun afternoon at an amusement park (just be sure to drink tons of water - it's hot). Stop by the Dallas Aquarium or the Ft. Worth Zoo. There are quite literally hundreds of places to visit. I can pretty much guarantee that there's something for just about everyone in your family within a short distance of the Metroplex.
The Ocean - I don't care which one. Every kid needs to feel the sand between their toes. There are few things like standing in front of the massive ocean at sunset. Absolutely beautiful. Don't forget the excitement of building sand castles and chasing the waves. Go for a family stroll on the beach to collect sea shells and sand dollars. Don't forget the sunscreen!
Volunteer -I think this is a getaway with no price tag. Do you want to make a significant impact on your child? Want them to look beyond themselves? Get them to help others. Take a family mission trip where you help those less fortunate. Volunteer as a family with an organization like Habitat for Humanity if your kids are old enough. Volunteer in a soup kitchen or travel with a disaster relief crew. Help your children see that the world is bigger than the street where they live. You will be amazed by your kids capacity to love and give. Don't forget to throw in some fun times on these type of trips as well. They need to learn that giving of yourself is a rewarding experience, and it's a great way for your family to bond.

"What's in the Bible" DVD Review

Do you remember the days of Sunday School felt boards? Well, Phil Vischer (the creator of Veggie Tales), Tyndale.com and the folks at WhatsintheBible.com have released an excellent new series of DVDs called "What's in the Bible." These DVDs bring the stories of the Bible to life in fun and vibrant ways. Your kids can learn a TON of stuff without even realizing it. The videos are funny and entertaining (Think Veggie Tales with puppets).

Israel Gets a King is the fifth DVD in the series. There are great songs, animated segments, and fun puppet friends to help explain the books of 1 and 2 Samuel. We learn about the first three kings of Israel: Saul, David, and Solomon. They even explain how God's promise to King David connects to our own salvation. We learn that these kings were not perfect and had to deal with the consequences for their sin.

I love these videos. They make learning about the Bible fun for kids of all ages (including grown-ups). I definitely respect the fact that they don't shy away from the more difficult topics like an explanation of the Trinity, and yet it's done in an age appropriate and understandable way.

The Bible is one of our most precious treasures. I think it's so fundamentally important to instill a love and solid understanding of God's Word in the life of our children! The What's in the Bible DVDs are a great resource for your family and church.

"The Damascus Way" by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke * Book Review

Have you ever wondered what it might have been like to live among the first century Christians? In book three of the Acts of Faith Series, The Damascus Way, Davis Bunn and Janette Oke bring to life the struggles and fears of these early followers of The Way.

Facing persecution at the hand of Saul of Tarsus, members of the fledgling church flee from Jerusalem to settle in outlying areas. Julia, the daughter of wealthy merchant Jamal, soon encounters followers of The Way and finds her life taking a course different from what she originally envisioned.

Young Jacob, a caravan guard for Julia's father, embarks on dangerous journeys on the "Frankincense Trail" as well as relaying messages between believers in the area. As their paths intersect, Julia and Jacob must overcome their initial mistrust to accomplish an essential mission.

I'm always a bit hesitant to jump into a book mid-series, but I didn't find that to be a problem in this novel. I didn't feel like I was missing any essential information even though this is the third book in the series. The story is interesting and well written, and definitely sheds light on what life might have been like for those early followers of Christ. As you might assume from the title of the series, "Acts of Faith," many of the characters and events in the novel are taken from the book of Acts. Of course, these are fictional accounts of what might have happened, but the story remains true to the Biblical account.

It's an easy read full of adventure and a little romance thrown in for good measure. If you're a fan of religious historical fiction, I'm sure you'll enjoy this collaboration by Bunn and Oke, both veterans of the Christian writing world.

Cooking with Coca-Cola

I think we all have those distinctive tastes and smells that instantly take us back to childhood. For me, it's the taste of Coke. We had soda in our house from time to time growing up, but whenever we went to my grandmother's house we loaded up. To this day, when I open a can of coke I feel like it's Thanksgiving or Christmas at my grandparent's house. My grandmother shops at Sams Club and bought Cokes in bulk, so there was always plenty to go around. I was always afraid of drinking it too much during other times of the year and losing the "special" factor that I always associated its taste.

As I've gotten older, I've learned that there are tons of other great uses for Coca Cola, aside from a dinnertime beverage or a tasty Coke Float. Have you ever tried Ham Steaks marinated and baked in Coke? Mmmmm, super tasty and delicious. It's an oh-so-easy adaptation of the classic tastes of Coke.

If desired, you can marinate the ham overnight in the refrigerator. I like to place the ham in a large zip-lock bag or sealable container and then pour in half a can of coke. Let it sit in the fridge overnight. The next day, you can drain out the Coke from the marinade and place the ham in a baking dish. Pour half a can of Coke over the ham and cover. Bake for 4-5 hours at 275.

The Coke gives the ham a nice flavor and I think helps make it more tender and juicy. Plus, it’s super, duper easy. As the busy mom of a preschooler, I’m always on the look-out for easy family recipes.

There are tons of great ways to incorporate this fun soda into everyday family recipes. Now that summer is quickly approaching, why not try a Coke Pop? Pour a can of coke into a popsicle mold and stick it in the freezer until they are solid. If you don’t own plastic popsicle molds, you can always fill a Dixie cup with soda, cover the top with saran wrap and stick a popsicle stick down the center. When the popsicle is frozen, simply peel away the paper cuper.

Where does the time go??

First off, I want to apologize for being a bit of a negligent blogger over the last few months. Things have been absolutely crazy in our house the last several weeks. Since January, we have purchased our first home and we are just weeks away from welcoming home baby boy #2. The last several weeks have been a flurry of activity and busyness.

I don't know why I have felt the urge to totally renovate the house while in the third trimester, but the urge had to be satisfied. We have now painted the kitchen, living room, office, master bedroom and bathroom. I've swapped out light fixtures. Re-tiled and painted a built-in bar. Wall-mounted a television in the living room. As of last night, I also sewed curtains for the nursery. I plan on posting pictures of my frugal home improvements on the blog as I get the time. I'm a big fan of cheap DIY projects (my budget is a big fan of them too!)

So now after a frenzy of activity, this mama is pooped. So what am I doing during nap-time? Writing on my blog. Who cares that there are dishes in my sink and that my laundry basket is overflowing. . . they'll still be there in five minutes.

I'm so super excited to meet this little boy. This pregnancy has just absolutely flown right by! Pretty soon our family of three will become a family of four. So, bear with me if posts are a little scarce over the next few weeks. I promise I'm not giving up, I'm just going to be focusing on family for a bit (and on recouping the sleep I've been missing for the last several months)!

Yay for Peeps

I think we've all had them at some point in our lives - those fluffy, yellow, marshmallowy little birds known as Peeps. I remember getting them in my easter basket as a child. They were pretty much a staple every year. I would try to make them last as long as possible. A little nibble here, a little nibble there, but inevitably they'd be gone withing 5 minutes.

As I got older, I got a kick out of sticking the pink bunnies in the microwave and watching them mutate into giant bunnies a la Ghost Buster's style. Sure, they're pretty much pure sugar, but they are also an Easter basket right of passage.

There are tons of fun things to do with Peeps. Our local MOPS group is considering an Easter craft which creates an edible diorama - S'mores in a jar.

1. Take a basic mason jar.
2. Crumble up a sleeve of graham crackers.
3. Place 2/3 of the graham cracker crumbs in the bottom of the jar.
4. Add 1/4 cup of M&Ms - using green ones make it look like grass, but any holiday colors would be equally festive.
5. Arrange 8-12 peeps (bunnies work great)around the perimeter of the jar.
6. Place the remaining graham cracker crumbs in the center of the peep circle to help hold them in place. You'll want to press the crumbs down to help it stay more secure.
7. Add 1 1/4 cup of M&Ms on top.
8. Top it off with 1/3 cup of Brown sugar and fill any remaining space with M&Ms.

Here's what you can put on the tag:
Holiday S'MORES
1. Empty contents of the jar into a bowl. Cut the peeps into bits with kitchen shears or
cut up with a knife. Return the bits to the mixture. Mix well.
2. Melt 1/2 cup butter; add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Pour this over the dry ingredients,
mixing well. Pat into a greased 8" or 9" square pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15
minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

How do you keep your family happy?

"Money can't buy happiness."

Well, if money can't buy it, then where can we find it? Happiness doesn't have to be an elusive thing. There are several simple, no-money-required, things that the average family can do to help foster an attitude happiness. Here are a few of my favorite "happy makers."

Begin a dinnertime tradition. I recently read in a magazine about a family that makes it a point to share "What I like about you." It can be simple as saying: "Do you know what I like about you?" Share praise for those special qualities, characteristics and attitudes that you admire. I think this is a great way to promote happiness among those in your household.
Focus on people, not things. Things can be fun, but they cannot guarantee happiness. Focus your family's attention on building relationships and memories, not in acquiring more "stuff." Perhaps consider taking a family trip instead of buying more video games (unless of course video-gaming is a family activity).
Cut the complaining. I could definitely use some improvement in this area. It’s not too hard to find something to complain about. If you’re looking for something negative, you’ll be able to find it without too much difficulty. Instead, if you focus on the positive attributes (whether in an individual or a situation) you’ll find contentment and happiness much easier to find.
Moms: Take some time for yourself. As busy parents, it’s easy to put our needs on hold. I’m not advocating selfishness or neglecting our God-given responsibilities, BUT it’s sooooo important to take care of yourself. If you are rundown and burnt-out, it’s so much harder to foster a happy attitude at home.
Get some exercise. Get moving. Not only is exercise good for your body, it’s also good for your mind. Exercising releases endorphins that help you feel better.
Surprise! I love you. Look for special ways to let your family know how you feel about them. Slip a note into a lunchbox or briefcase. Buy/make their favorite snack and leave them a note telling them you’re thinking about them.
Watch what you watch. What you watch can make a difference. What you put into your brain makes a difference. Fill your mind with positive messages, tv programs, and movies. If all you see is the negative, then that is what you will tend to focus on.

God is faithful

I mentioned a few weeks ago that the husb and I are working our way through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. For those of you not familiar with Dave, he's a get out of debt, stay out of debt financial guru. He encourages people to be "weird" because "normal" means debt up to your eyeballs and struggling to make ends meet. His motto is "Live like no one else, so that later you can live like no one else." Meaning that, for now, you might drive an older car, eat beans and cornbread, and buy your furniture at yard sales, but by living on a realistic budget and paying with cash instead of credit, you are setting your family up for a secure financial future. Keeping up with the Joneses is out. Keeping current on your bills and plans for the future is definitely in.

In the three months we've been in the program, we've managed to pay off over $2000 in debt (this includes all of our credit cards (which are no longer in my wallet, by the way), a student loan, and a medical bill), establish a $1000 emergency fund, and set aside enough cash to cover the anticipated medical expenses of our second child's upcoming birth (in about 7 more weeks!!).

Just so you know, we're an average American, single-income family. It's not like we've got loads of surplus cash floating around. We have enough to cover our expenses and to allow us to eat out and see a movie from time to time. Learning to be disciplined with our spending has made all of the difference to us financially. Now, before I buy anything I ask myself two important questions: Do I really NEED this item? Can I afford it (aka - is there money in the budget set aside for this)?

Some may think that "budget" is a bad word, but really it has provided so much freedom. Now, I don't have to worry if there's money in the bank to cover a high electric bill, or if we've got anything set aside for an oil change. Living on a budget has brought with it freedom from stress and worry - and accountability for our actions.

But to be honest, I have to give credit where credit is due. God has been more than faithful to provide for our needs. Sure, it's been in little ways here and there, but I wanted to share a few of the "coincidences" that have made a difference in our family in the last couple months.

I'm an independent Pampered Chef Consultant (which I LOVE, by the way). In the last few months I've gone from having two months with no booked shows to all of a sudden having four shows booked in less than six weeks. My last three Pampered Chef parties have enabled me to pay off both my student loan and a medical bill. I'm thankful for that unanticipated extra source of income. Business has gone from a dead halt to booming.

Our local water company offers rebate for water saving devices. My husband and I were needing to replace an older toilet in our home. We essentially got a brand new toilet for free - something we were needing. We also got a rebate on the washing machine we purchased last year - which means we now have an unexpected $300 credit on our water bill.

Just yesterday, a member of our church generously provided us with beef from a cow he slaughtered, enabling us to save money on our grocery bill.

I just found out that through the Pampered Chef I can save 10% on our cell phone bill which equates to around $240 a year.

Through my blog I've been able to earn over $100 in gift cards to cover expenses like diapers and wipes.

Some may overlook those sort of things, but I've learned not to take even the little things for granted. Every dollar we're able to save puts us one step closer to being debt free. They are little blessings, but to me, they are evidences of God's faithfulness. He has blessed our efforts to be good stewards of His resources. I look forward to continuing this process and hope to soon by completely debt free (apart from our home mortgage which is going to take a LOOOOOONG time). It's going to be a long road, at least a year based on our current situation, but it's going to be a good journey.

My prayer is to one day be able to provide for my children to go to college without the burden of debt, to live in a paid-for home, and to be free to use our resources to live and give freely. Is it going to be hard? You betcha. Is it going to be worth it? Absolutely.

"Beauty Out of Chaos" - Journal for a great cause

Back in January I shared about the tragic car accident that took the life of Brie Gomez. If you missed the post you can read about it here.

Brie was a fellow blogger and a godly mom who loved her babies and her God. Her family and friends have recently turned her blog into a journal format. Funds from the sale of this journal will go to help cover the family's expenses. Her little boy, Curren Blaec Gomez, was delivered nine weeks premature immediately following the car accident and remained in the NICU for an extended period of time.

He has recently been released from the NICU and is doing well at home with his daddy and two big sisters.

Mmmmm Nutella

When I was pregnant with my first son I craved ravioli. This time around, I've continuously craved Nutella. I spread it on fruit. I spread it on a warm waffle. I dip pretzel sticks in it. I've even been known to dig right in with a spoon from time to time (don't judge). What is Nutella? It's magical, chocolate, hazelnut goodness in a jar.

I first tried Nutella in college and I've been hooked ever since. When the folks at Mommy Parties and Mom Select mentioned hosting a Breakfast Nutella Party, I was excited to sign up! Who needs an excuse to get together with friends, chat, and enjoy some Nutella for breakfast?

The folks at Nutella provided a selection of recipe cards, coupons, a travel coffee mug and Nutella samples. As the busy mom of a toddler, I enjoyed our brief Nutella break. I had a few extra goody bags left over since a couple of guests had to back out at the last minute, but I plan on sharing the love and taking them to our local MOPS (Mother's of Preschooler's Meeting) tomorrow.

"A Trail of Ink" by Mel Starr ** Book Review

Master Hugh de Singleton came to Oxford with the hopes of finding a comely lass to make his wife, what he found instead, was a theft, a murder, and a mystery.

Set in 14th century Oxford, A Trail of Ink, is an enjoyable medieval mystery. This is the third installment of the Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, surgeon. I have not read the previous two works, but was able to easily jump into the story without feeling like I was missing any important background information.

It is evident that the author, Mel Starr has a background in medieval history and literature. There were times I felt like I was reading something written centuries ago (that's not a bad thing). I appreciated the research and talent it takes to write in this style without it coming across as "put-on" or forced. I feel like I had learned a lot about medieval Oxford by the time the story concluded.

I found the plot to be interesting and the mystery intriguing. I looked forward to solving the mystery alongside Singleton. If you're looking for an enjoyable medieval mystery, check out this latest work from Mel Starr, A Trail of Ink.

"Chasing Francis" by Ian Morgan Cron *Book Review

If you asked me how much I knew about St. Francis of Assisi, I would have to confess that I'm only really familiar with the stone garden statue of the saint spending time with animals. That's about it. Although, I've heard about him, I was never really familiar with his life story or his impact on Christianity.

Chasing Francis is the story of one man's pilgrimage to get in touch with authentic Christianity. Chase Falson seemed to have it all together - the pastor of a large church plant, successful ministry, growing congregation - but a tragic loss shakes his faith and results in a fall from grace. The Elders encourage him to take some time away to reevaluate his role as pastor of the church. A trip to Italy to visit his uncle, a Franciscan priest, introduces him to the world of St. Francis of Assisi. Falson realizes that he has a lot to learn from Francis. His pilgrimage leads him to reevaluate his view of his own faith and that of contemporary American Christianity.

As someone who's been involved in Christian ministry (I'm a third generation pastor's wife), I've witnessed first-hand the stresses, frustrations, and danger of potential ministry burnout. Part of what drew me to this story was the fact that it was the story of a burned out pastor wanting to get in touch with an authentic, growing faith. It's easy to get cynical when dealing with the stresses of ministry on a daily basis. Francis' story is helpful reminder that the Christian faith is about authentic living. One of the most admirable things I learned about Francis is that he genuinely sought to live out Christ's commands. He was a peacemaker, a nature-lover, and took seriously to mission to communicate the message of Christ in a way that the common man could understand.

The book also features a "Pilgrim's Guide" to allow the reader to work through his/her own pilgrimage while reading the story.

Whether you've grown up learning about St. Francis of Assisi or if, like me, you're largely unfamiliar with his story, Chasing Francis is an enjoyable/educational novel. The author does a great job of weaving the biography of Francis into the narrative. Cron does a great job of sharing Francis' story and encouraging the reader to pick up where he left off.

What Makes you Feel Lucky

In keeping with the "Lucky to Have Friends Like You" theme, Redbox has asked, "What makes you feel lucky?" I know that as busy wives and moms it's easy to pull out the ole reliable answer of "my family." Although this is definitely true, I believe that I am lucky in so many different ways.

I am lucky to live in one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Even though my family and I are far from wealthy, we have a warm house to live in. We always have food on our table . . .and yes, Ramen Noodles DOES count as food. I have clothes on my back and shoes on my feet. I even have a shiny used minivan in my driveway. Compared the vast majority of the world's population, I am tremendously lucky.

I am educated. I had the opportunity to not only go to high school, but to complete a college degree. This is unheard of for many women throughout the world, some with little more than an elementary education. Sure, I currently spend my days wiping noses and bottoms, but my education has fully equipped me to be a well-rounded wife, mother, and citizen. I am educating the next generation, and my education helped shape me into the intelligent woman I am today. I consider myself even luckier when I realize that I was able to leave college without major student loan debt. Scholarships and hard work helped pay off.

I am lucky to have the Internet to enable me to stay connected with friends and family scattered literally around the world. I can video chat with a friend in Shanghai or share a cup of tea with a friend the next state over. These things were unheard of a few decades ago. I think we're all pretty lucky to be able to enjoy these things.

I am lucky to have good health and access to good healthcare. Now in my third-trimester, I'm thankful for a healthy baby and pregnancy. We are not guaranteed good health, so I definitely don't want to take my health for granted. It makes such a difference in the quality of our lives and in the lives of our families.

Although, to be honest. I don't like to call it "luck." I believe that I am blessed. I don't deserve any of these things, but I am certainly thankful that they are a part of my life!

Top Ten Tips For Getting Away with Great Family Travel Deals

Living on a budget is a recurring theme on my blog. Just because you're on a budget doesn't mean that you can't have any fun, it's just takes a little additional planning. Here are ten helpful tips for getting great deals for your next family trip!

Plan ahead. You don't want a vacation that follows you home. All of the relaxing benefits of vacation quickly vanish when you open a credit card statement. Do you know that you want to take a vacation this summer? Start setting aside cash each month to fund your trip. A grandiose trip may take a little longer to save up for, but it's so much more enjoyable knowing that you have the money to cover your expenses!
Look at alternative lodging arrangements. Some of our favorite vacations have been spent at vacation rentals as opposed to hotels. Vacation Rentals By Owner has been a helpful resource for our family. You get a lot more space for your money and a bit of privacy too.
Save money by not eating out. If you follow tip #2, there's a good chance that your rental includes a kitchen. You can save tons of money by preparing a few meals in your condo/apartment/rental house. You can still enjoy a good meal out, just go out for lunch instead of the more expensive dinner option.
Consider traveling during off-peak seasons. Most people think of Breckenridge, Colorado as a great ski resort, but did you know that it's a beautiful place to visit in the fall? Many places offer discounted rates if you travel during these off-peak times.
If you must stay in a hotel, try an online search engine to find the lowest price. If you're not particular about which particular hotel you stay in, I would suggest trying out one of those "name your own price" type of sites. You can set the quality of the hotel (5 star, etc.) and then you get placed in an available hotel for a rate that's lower than the hotel's lowest published rate. We've only done this once, but it worked out well.
Take advantage of club discounts. My family and I are members of AAA. We get discounts on hotels, car rentals, even pretzels at the mall. They even offer travel packages, but we've never booked one through them.
Shop around. If you find a lower rate at a competitor, it's worth mentioning. The company may be willing to match their price on a comparable product in order to gain your business. It never hurts to ask. The worst thing they could do would be to say "no."
Set a budget and stay faithful to it. This falls in line with the whole "plan ahead" tip. Even a "great deal" can turn into a bad thing if you don't have the money to pay for it. Travel within your means. You can have a great time at a wide variety of price points. Splurge on what's important to you, whether that be lodging, a nice rental car, or a fun night out. Don't go overboard, but enjoy what you've worked hard to save up!
Ask your friends for recommendations. Do you have friends at the same point in life as you are? Kids, age, etc. Find out where they've been lately and what deals they were able to find. Word of mouth can be a great way to find out about discounts, special promotions, etc.
Travel with friends or family. You can get more for your money if you are splitting the costs. Some friends of mine recently took a girl's weekend to a luxury hotel in a nearby town. I never would have been able to afford the hotel on my own, but split the price four ways and suddenly it's affordable. It's a great way to make lifelong memories and save hard-earned cash at the same time!

It's possible to travel, have a great time, and NOT break the bank. You just have to be wise in the way you plan your trip. There are great online resources, programs, and guides to help you make your travel dreams come true. Take a little time and do a little research - the savings are definitely out there! Money and Manna

The hubby and I are working our way through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. It's been an eye-opening journey thus far. We've been fortunate not to acquire tons of debt during our nearly five years of marriage, but like the vast majority of families in America, we've subscribed to the "buy now, pay later" mentality.

With baby #2 set to arrive in around 10 weeks and a new home mortgage (we just bought our first home a few weeks ago), we decided that now was the time to make sure our finances were in order. In the past, I've generally been the one responsible for paying bills, checking the bank account, ensuring that everyone gets paid. Thankfully, we've been able to pay our bills each month, but we've also done a fantastic job of spending every penny that has come in. Looking back, I wish we would have done a better job of saving. I don't know if I was afraid of the accountability that would come from writing everything down on paper and seeing where our money was actually going, or if I just thought that ignorance was bliss. What you don't know, can't hurt you . . . except that it can.

One of our first assignments in the class was to set up a $1000 emergency fund. Fortunately, with the help of Christmas gifts, we were able to check that first baby step off of the list. It's a great reassurance to know that if the car breaks down, or if we have an unplanned medical emergency, we have funds set aside to bail us out.

The second step is to pay off all debt and cut up those ole credit cards. In our first month we completely got rid of all credit card debt. Admittedly it wasn't much, just a couple hundred dollars worth of textbooks and baggage fees from Christmas vacation, but when it came time to cut up the credit cards, I froze. What if I needed them? I immediately felt convicted. It was as if God was saying "Who do you trust? Me or those credit cards?" Ouch.

Do I truly trust God to provide "daily bread." Note: I did NOT say daily Lexus or flat screen TV - God is not in the magic genie business. His blessings are always intended to serve a purpose - to further His kingdom not our own self-centered endeavors. He wants maturing children, not spoiled ones. If someone has told you that God's purpose is to serve as your own personal holy ATM machine, they're a little off from the mark. Yes, God loves to bless his children, just like we love to care for our own, but "blessings" are not always found in the form of "bucks." That being said, scripture does show that when we are faithful with the "talents" (Matthew 25:14-30) entrusted to us, that God will entrust us with greater responsibilities (to further his purposes). After all, when it comes down to it, everything belongs to Him. He just lets us manage it for a short while.

In my family right now, it seems like money and manna have a lot in common. We have enough for today and we have to trust that God will provide enough for tomorrow. I seriously doubt that we'll ever be wealthy, and that's OK. My prayer is that like the widow Elijah helped (1 Kings 17:7-16), we can come to the oil jar and find that we have enough for yet another day and enough to help those we can.

The Way Home: DVD Review

A missing child is any parent's worst nightmare. Work-obsessed Randy Simpkins (played by Dean Cain)was distracted for only a few minutes when his son Joe disappears. This momentary distraction leads to a family's life-changing crisis.

Taking place over the course of one day, viewers are invited into this family's struggle to deal with the uncertainty of what happens to their son. I don't want to spoil the plot, but the end of the movie details how this event leads to Simpkins changing his life.

Fair warning: this is a tear-jerker. Of course, when you're pregnant, like I am, Hallmark commercials are tear-jerkers. Since becoming a parent, any film dealing with the loss (or fear of loss of a child) sends me running to the tissue box.

I felt that the film was fairly well made. It's a beneficial reminder that families are more important than business success!

Baby proofing is a rite of passage for parents of young children. If it's dangerous, kids seem innately drawn to it. That's why I'm so thankful for companies that provide parents with the tools they need to create a safe place to play. The folks at Kid-E-Cover have released a handy dandy outlet cover to help keep curious little fingers (and toys) out of the outlet.

Traditional outlet plugs have been around for quite a while now, and to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of them. First of all, they are often difficult to remove - this is great for keeping your kids from taking them out of the outlet, but it can be a hassle when you need access to the outlet. Secondly, you are bound to have them appearing in random places around the house. My little boy has been known to carry the removed plugs off to his room, to the kitchen, or under the couch.

Dos and Don'ts of Dinner Table Etiquette.

If only I lived in a "Leave it to Beaver" world. My family sitting sweetly around a perfectly laid out table, politely passing dishes of homecooked goodness around the family table. Fast forward to the real world and you will discover my husband and I sitting on our couch with our tray tables munching on my "prepared" (previously frozen) dinner. As my family continues to grow, I am on the look out for ways to set a better example of the dos and don'ts of dinner time etiquette. Here are the ten goals I would like to have in place for my own family's dinner time.

No Cell Phones Allowed. It's hard to carry on meaningful conversations if everyone is in their own technological world. Seriously, the text messages can wait thirty minutes until after dinner is over.
The regular phone can wait. You might think, "Wait a second, isn't that the same thing?" Our house has a handy dandy thing called an answering machine. If it's an emergency or a pressing situation we can hear it on the machine, otherwise, the call can wait until our family dinner is over.
Please and Thank You. Barney tells us that these are called the "magic words." It's not unrealistic to expect your children to ask for and pass food with politeness. We've taught our 18 month-old some baby sign language, including the words "please" and "thank you." So now, when he wants a snack or some more toast, he says please. It's never to early to start modeling good behaviour.
Turn off the Tube. This is hard for me. I'm weird, in that I really don't like the sound of people eating. I enjoy having a little bit of background noise to drown out the chewing sounds, but this same goal can be accomplished through some softly playing background music.
Everybody Shares in Conversation. I've heard of families that go around the table sharing about their day. Each individual shares one thing that made them "sad, mad, and glad." It's a great way to make dinnertime more than about sharing a meal.
Don't Reach across the Table. Rather than sticking your armpit in your brother's face, simply ask politely (using "please" of course). If reaching for food places you in your neighbors space, it's better to ask for the item to be passed.
Ask to be Excused. Just because you've finished your dinner in record time doesn't mean that you are free to dash back off to your own little world. Stay at the table for a little while and participate in conversation.
Try Every New Food at Least Once. Let's face it, some foods just look weird. Or they smell weird. Or they seem just plain ole unappetizing. Our family rule: try at least one bite. Don't judge a food before tasting it - it might just surprise you.
Keep Your Bodily Functions to Yourself. Burping is gross and definitely unappetizing. If you feel gas on it's way, politely excuse yourself from the table and take care of business. No one else wants to listen to (or smell) your gasiness. It's just plain rude.
Clean up After Yourself. Take your used plates and dishes to the sink. Do you want bonus points? Rinse them off and stick them in the dishwasher. If everyone does their part, clean-up doesn't take long at all.

The family table is a great place to share life together. Learning a few simple dos and don'ts can make the process more enjoyable for everyone.

Boba Carrier Review - A Mom's Best Friend

Sometimes I think moms could use an extra set of arms . . . actually, I think sometimes we could manage just fine if the arms we were given were free to do what needed to be done. That is where baby-wearing has saved my life. My sweet little boy, now 18-months-old, wanted to constantly be held when he was younger. Baby-wearing made it possible for me to get things done around the house, go for a walk, or even check my e-mail. Now, with baby number two on the way, I've been interested in comparing different baby carrier options.

The Boba carrier is a soft-structured baby carrier.The beginning weight limit is 15 lbs, so this carrier is intended for older babies and children. It does not currently offer any type of newborn insert. It is similar to a backpack in style and can be worn on both the back and the front.

Here are a few of the things I really liked about the Boba:

The shoulder straps and waist strap are nicely padded, adjustable and were comfortable to wear.
The Boba is suitable for children 15-45 lbs which means I will be able to use it for a long time and it's versatile enough that I can use it with both an infant and a toddler with just a few quick strap adjustments!
It can be worn comfortably on both the back and the front.
I thought the foot straps were a neat feature for older kiddos. It helps keep the legs in a comfortable position for the child. My little one had a blast moving his foot back and forth in the stirrups.
The sleeping hood is a great asset for younger children. It comfortably supports the infant's head and makes for a more conducive sleeping environment.
There are tons of super cute colors and patterns to choose from, as well as some great organic options. I love the Tweet pattern.

There were a few things I had trouble with:

When wearing the baby on your front you must reach both hands behind your back to fasten the top buckle. Although the two shoulder straps are securely holding your infant in the carrier, I was a little bit nervous to take my hands off of my child to fasten the last strap. This did not feel like a big issue when I was wearing the baby on my back.
It takes quite a bit of practice to put the child on your back without assistance. It's super easy when you have another person to help, but it was a bit challenging to do it by myself. I'm sure it would get easier with practice, but the first few times were a bit awkward.

All in all I was pleased with the Boba carrier. It was quick and easy to put on and comfortably distributed my 25 lb son's weight. I look forward to trying it out again with baby #2. Thanks to my handsome hubby for modeling the Boba. My growing baby bump has been impeding my baby wearing in the last couple weeks. As you can tell, it works great for both guys and gals!

Lainey O'Toole made a decision as a ten-year-old girl that forever changed the life of an Amish family. Fifteen years later, she unexpectedly returns to the town of Stoney Ridge when her car breaks down on her way to culinary school. A series of "circumstances" brings Lainey face to face with those involved in the accident from fifteen years earlier.

Bess Reihl is somewhat hesitant to spending the summer with her grandmother Bertha on the family farm. Due to the strained relationship between her grandmother and her father Jonah, Bess has not spent much time with her family in Pennsylvania. Anxious to escape potential summer school and her father's courtship with an overly cheerful neighbor, Bess agrees to spend some time in Stoney Ridge.

The worlds of the Amish and English collide in this novel by Suzanne Woods Fisher. It is a story of love and forgiveness. This is my first glimpse into the world of Amish fiction. To be honest, I didn't know much about Amish culture before reading the book. I thought it was interesting to learn about the different customs and traditions of the Amish faith.

I felt that the story was interesting, although somewhat predictable (which is fairly common for this genre - boy meets girl, problems arise, boy and girl fall in love). I think Fisher did a good job of keeping the reader interested in the story. The character of Bess develops from a self-focused child into a maturing young adult. Things did not end exactly the way I anticipated, which is a good thing in my book.

This is the third book in the Secrets of Lancaster series. The novel is able to stand alone apart from the other books, which is good since I haven't read them yet. . I thought the book was an easy and enjoyable read. This is the first work I read by Fisher. I look forward to reading more in the future.

The plains of West Texas may hold a treasure worth millions. The legendary Spider Rock treasure has lured treasure hunters for centuries, and one man will go to any length, even murder, to get the treasure for himself. Three men were found murdered on Carr Sullivan's ranch making him the prime suspect in the mysterious slayings, but something tells FBI Special Agent Bella Jordan that there is more going on than meets the eye. She must confront the shadows from her past if she hopes to solve the murders.

Author DiAnn Mills weaves a story of intrigue and mystery in this novel. I was initially drawn to read this book based primarily on its setting. Having lived in West Texas for a number of years, I was curious to see how Mills would portray the area. I was also curious to know if I could recognize any of the locations she described. I was not disappointed. Her descriptions of the land and the people who inhabit it were right on.

The story offers plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The love story is somewhat expected, but I thought as a whole the story was well-written and enjoyable. I look forward to reading more of Mills work in the future.

"Change of Plans" Movie Review

I love good, family-friendly entertainment. Unfortunately, in today's culture, it's often difficult to find a prime-time movie you can watch with the whole family. Wal-Mart and Proctor & Gamble are sponsoring tonight's Family Movie Night presentation of "Change of Plans."

I had a chance to preview the film a few days ago, and I was pleased. It's not your mult-million dollar blockbuster film, but it's a cute story emphasizing the importance of family.

Sally and Jason Danville seem to have it all together. Sally's an aspiring musician. Jason's a successful fighter-pilot. The young couple enjoys their independent lifestyle until a tragic accident brings four young children into their lives and home.

I enjoyed the movie. It had it's touching moments. Of course, when you're pregnant like I am, Kleenex commercials can make you cry. There were also several humorous scenes as the children and the Danvilles get adjusted to life together. There were the occasional product placements (ex. drinking Wal-mart's Great Value brand orange juice at breakfast), but they did not interfere with the movie, nor were they blatantly obvious.

Pop some popcorn and plop on the couch with the kids for the latest Family Movie Night presentation - "Change of Plans."

The movie airs tonight at 8/7c on FOX.

If your New Year's resolution is to memorize scripture, the Topical Memory System from the Navigators is a great resource. The kit comes with a workbook designed to help you learn methods to memorize Bible verses, a vinyl verse holder, and 60 verse cards in eight different translations.

This is a great resource for Christians of all ages. The verses and holder are a wonderful tool to help those wanting to commit portions of God's word to memory. Like any memory based system, it requires the individual to be committed to investing the time necessary to learn and remember. If you've got the desire, and the self-discipline, the Topical Memory system will be of great benefit! I highly recommend it.

The Navigator's also offer the VerseMinder Topical Memory app. I have it on my iPod touch and have really enjoyed it. It's great for when you're waiting in line or just passing the time. It will quiz you on the verses you have learned using a basic "fill in the blank" process. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to invest time in learning God's word. The app retails for around $4.

"Amy Inspired" by Bethany Pierce - Book Review

Amy has ambitions. One day she will fulfill her dream of being a published author. For now, in between her teaching responsibilities at the local university, she catalogs her many rejection letters in a notebook. Governed by lists and unfulfilled plans, Amy wonders if her dreams will ever be realized. When a male friend of her roommate, Zoe, needs a place to crash, she begrudgingly agrees. Eli's artistic ways are quite different from Amy's ordered existence and initially she is not thrilled with his intrusion.Will this unexpected visitor change Amy's life for the better or for the worse?

I really enjoyed the story. I love that the protagonist is flawed. I get sick to death of sappy, cookie-cutter women in Christian fiction. Don't get me wrong, I am all for books that communicate the message of Christ's love and redemption. I just like to see it fleshed out in reality in a way that someone living down the street can relate to. I sure know that I'm not perfect, but I do know that I take my faith seriously and I learn from my mistakes. I love that the author allowed Amy to be real. She messes up. She faces temptation and sometimes falls short of making the best decisions. She has hopes and dreams. She falls in love, but makes a mess of things. Her character is one that I think many people can relate to in one way or another.

A beautiful love story and inspiring work of fiction. I look forward to reading more of Pierce's work in the future.

"The Topkapi Secret" by Terry Kelhawk - Book Review

If it's not worth dying for, it's not worth living for.

Angela Hall, a Berkley English professor, thought she was accepting a summer research opportunity in Turkey. Through her travels in the Middle East she becomes entangled with a man determined to reveal the Topkapi Secret to the world, even if it costs him his life.

The Koran is the most sacred text for a billion Muslims on the planet. Palestinian Koranic researcher, Mohammad Atareek is on a quest to determine if the words of the Koran are indeed what they claim to be - the unchanged word of Allah. Someone is determined to keep his research from being published. As more and more researchers face suspicious deaths, Atareek is intent on tracking down the murderer and revealing the secret to the world.

Angela and Mohammad set out on an exciting adventure that spans Israel, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, and more. Will they discover who's behind the murders or will they take their suspicions to their graves.

I am fascinated by Middle Eastern culture. The author does a superb job of detailing different aspects of Middle Eastern life - from food, to dress, to appropriate social interactions. Rich in historical detail and full of vivid descriptions, you will feel like you are taking the journey with Angela and Mohammad. The plot is riveting and loaded with action and intrigue. I was very interested in the sections related to the history of the Koran. As a student of world religious, I enjoyed learning not only about the different codex, but also the history behind the initial canonization and publication of the Koran. I certainly learned a lot. You can tell the author did a substantial amount of research on the story.

Don't worry, it's not an academic paper disguised as a novel. The characters are well-developed and interesting. There's plenty of romance and close-escapes. I had a hard time putting it down. If you like a good espionage story, you'll enjoy the Topkapi Secret.

Fair warning for my more conservative readers, I would probably give the book a PG-13 rating for a brief episode of strong language at the beginning of the book and some sensuality.

A life well lived

These words from the praise song "Forever Reign" were part of the last post Brie made on her family's blog just a few hours before heading back to Amarillo, TX. On her way home from celebrating Christmas with family last Sunday, her SUV was hit head-on by a car that crossed the center line. Brie was 30 years old and 7.5 months pregnant. In an instant, the life of a young family was tragically changed. After being care-flighted to a hospital, Brie's little boy, Curran, was delivered through an emergency c-section. He was only 3 lbs 1 oz when he was born. Brie passed away later that night as a result of the injuries she sustained in the accident. Her husband and two little girls, age 6 and almost 2 were also in the car at the time.

I didn't have an opportunity to know Brie very well since she was a few years older than I was and had already graduated by the time I moved to Dalhart. I went to high school with her brother and sister and attended church with her family. However, thanks to the wonders of Facebook and her family's blog I was able to keep up with the events in her life. Her love of Jesus and her love of her family is evident in her posts and comments. When a friend of hers who lives in my area was having health problems, Brie sent me a message to see if there was any way we could reach out to her. She was concerned, and wanted to make sure that her friend was OK. Her faith was sincere and evident to those who knew her. More than anything she wanted her children to know and love God.

It's hard to understand why things like this happen. There are certainly no easy answers, especially for loved ones left behind. One thing is certain, Brie's life has made a difference to countless people. They could see in her the love and compassion of Christ. Even after her death, six more families have the gift of life because of organ donation.

I bring her story up because I am a strong believer in the power of prayer and in the importance of bearing one another's burdens. Would you pray for her family? Pray for peace, grace, and provision in a time of great sorrow. Pray for baby Curran as he continues to struggle in NICU (particularly for his respiration and intestinal trouble). Pray for her husband Eric and two young daughters, Mali and Eleri, as they work through their grief. Pray that God can use Brie's testimony to point others to the hope of eternal life found through faith in Jesus Christ.

Brie's life and death have challenged me to make the most of the time I've been given. I'll freely admit that I've wasted a lot of time on things that really don't matter in the scheme of eternity. It has opened my eyes to the fragile nature of life on this earth, but it has also been a reminder that life continues even after we draw our last breath on the planet. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

While part of the country is getting slammed with a snowstorm, my part of the world is getting ready for 70 degree weather tomorrow. It's absolutely insane. Of course, to put things into perspective, it's also supposed to snow in two days. You never quite know what to expect.

The busyness of the season has kicked in. We have had something going on every single day for the last month. Christmas is my favorite time of the year, but it's wearing me out a little bit. Christmas parties, Christmas plays, Christmas cookies. There's always something to do. My prayer is that in the midst of this busy holiday season, I don't forget the message behind the celebration. God with us. The gift of family and friends. The celebration of the gifts and the Giver.

Twelve days till Christmas. It's hard to believe! It'll be here before we know it.

Norah Jones came out with her first album while I was in college. I loved her voice and style, so I was super excited for the opportunity to review her latest album Featuring. If the name isn't a dead giveaway, this album features a wide assortment of musical collaborations.

“A lot of the people on this record are people I've worshiped since I was a kid, and some of them are younger and more my contemporaries,” says Norah. “Even though the musicians are so varied, the vibe of the songs makes sense when we put them all together.”

It's not every day that Dolly Parton, Outkast, and the Foo Fighters appear on the same album. Norah Jones ties it all together. Although the songs are as different as the artists themselves, they do fit together nicely. I think one of my favorites is "More Than This" by Charlie Hunter. I also liked "Court & Spark" by Herbie Hancock.

I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable album - perfect for a rainy afternoon with a cup of hot tea. For some reason, Norah Jones always makes me feel like I'm in a coffee house, she just has a nice laid back mellow vibe in her music.

The thought of braving hoards of Black Friday shoppers is enough to fill me with me with dread. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good bargain. I'm not a big fan of standing outside in the freezing cold at three in the morning. I've compiled a list of my top five helpful tips for holiday tech shopping. There are definitely ways to get those must have items on your list, without spending all of your hard-earned cash.

Research, research, research. If you want to save the big bucks on your tech purchases you have to know what you're looking for. Sometimes you don't need a name brand in order to have a quality product. Investigate consumer and professional reviews to find out which product best suits your needs. I like to read the consumer reviews on the retailer's website. I like to check CNET for tech reviews. If you're not going to use your TV to connect to the internet, then there's no need to buy a television with that capability. Just because it has all the bells and whistles, doesn't mean that it's what you need - you may be spending money for unnecessary features.
Comparison Shop. One of my favorite tools to comparison shop is froogle.google.com. All you have to do is enter the name of the product and Google will pull up the stores that carry the item and the price they're asking. It can be a tremendous time-saver when you can have all of the information in one convenient place.
Check out Craigslist and E-bay. Sometimes you can find great buys on used products by checking out sites like Craigslist and E-bay. Just make sure that the seller is reputable, and NEVER send money over Craigslist for an item you've never seen. It's best to meet the seller in a public place to look at the item before purchasing, I like to take my husband or a friend along for safety sake.
Many places will price match competitor's ads. If your local store has sold out of the hot discounted TV you've had your eye on, try the store next door. Many places will match or even BEAT the advertised price - just make sure that it's for the same exact item.
Take advantage of holiday specials. I heard on the news this week that the best time to buy a TV was in mid-December. Many stores are anxious to receive your holiday spending money. Pay attention to online and print advertisements. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are obviously key bargain shopping times, but great deals can be found throughout the holiday season if your looking. There are tons of fabulous blogs devoted to these bargain hunting quests. A quick Google search should pull up some great resources.

"Almost Heaven" by Chris Fabry *Book Review (Free copies available)

Life is like an intricate tapestry. We earthbound humans can see only the tangled underside. We are unable to see things from the topside, where interwoven threads and colors create a grander picture. To outsiders, Billy Allman is a hillbilly genius - a gifted mandolin player and a talented musical engineer. Almost Heaven allows readers to see the bigger picture of Allman's life. His humble beginning, painful childhood, and adult struggles are placed on display for the reader, but it's not until the end of the novel that we are able to see the grander purpose and plan for Allman's life.

In a unique twist, the story allows us the perspective of Allman's guardian angel, Malachi in addition to Allman's own thoughts. It was a helpful reminder that there is more going on than what we can see with human eyes.

The story was well-written. The characters were well-developed and the plot was interesting. I have a great appreciation for Christian Fiction with imperfect heroes. Billy Allman is far from perfect, but his story is an inspiring reminder of the difference one life can make.

Beautiful story. I would definitely recommend it.

10 Tips for New Moms Bringing Baby Home

Bringing a newborn baby home for the first time can be a scary and daunting experience, especially for a first-time mother. The hospital seems like such a safe and sanitary environment. A home is . . . well, lived in and not quite a sterile environment. How do you make your home safe for your new bundle of joy? Here are ten tips for new mamas and their new bundles of joy.

Wash all of your baby's toys before you give them to your child. For the first year of his/her life, everything is going to go straight to the mouth. Give toys a gentle bath in warm, soapy water. Imagine all the hands that handled the toy in the store before you received it.
There is nothing wrong with asking visitors to wash their hands before handling your child. A newborn's immune system is still developing during the first several months of life. It's sometimes helpful to carry around hand-sanitizer in your diaper bag for this very reason. You don't have to be rude, simply say "hey, would you like some hand sanitizer?" Very few people will say no.
Invest in a "Kind Sign." When my little one was born, I didn't mind friends or family handling the baby, but I was seriously bothered when complete strangers would come up and touch and kiss my baby. I had NO idea what germs they carried, and didn't appreciate them invading my child's space. I now own a kind sign that says "Your germs are bigger than I am, please wash your hands before touching mine." The signs easily attach to infant car seat carriers.
There are many cute infant carrier covers on the market these days. I always liked to cover my child when we were in public places, especially Wal-Mart during flu season. It helps create a calm environment for the child and protects from stray coughs and sneezes.
I loved microwavable sterilizer bags. I used them for bottles, pacifiers, and my breast pump equipment. add a little bit of water to the bag and place it in the microwave. The steam helps to kill the germs on your baby's items.
Be mindful of what chemicals you are introducing into your baby's environment. I have been trying more and more to use natural materials when I clean my home. It's amazing how many things you can clean with baking soda and vinegar.
Clean the hard surfaces of the nursery before the baby arrives. It will help cut down on dust and eliminate any potential fungus or germs lingering on the surface. Read your crib's manufacturer's instructions for tips on how to properly clean and maintain your child's bed.
I am a baby-wearing mom. I always recommend that new moms invest in a comfortable baby carrier that fits their lifestyle. I wore a Moby Wrap with my first one, and it was a life saver. It enables your baby to feel safe, snug and secure, while still enabling you to get things done around the house.
A little bit off subject, but I definitely recommend that you practice adjusting the straps on your infant car seat. We made the mistake of not looking into it before we were ready to head home from the hospital. We spent about ten minutes in the hospital parking lot trying to figure out how to loosen and tighten the straps. It will make the whole "going home" process a lot easier if you've had a trial run.
I know it's off the subject of "germs" but one of the BEST tips for a new mom would be to accept ANY help that is offered. You will never be more exhausted, more hormonally all over the place than you are during those first weeks of life. If someone offers to pick up some groceries, drop your pride and let them.

You can do it. It may feel daunting at times. After all, it's the most precious thing you'll probably bring home. It's a lot of common sense and a lot of practical advice. Never be afraid to call a girlfriend or a mom. We're here as women to support and encourage one another in the mothering process. Kiss that baby and cherish every moment.

David Archuleta "The Other Side of Down" *Review and Giveaway

The Other Side of Down is the latest release from American Idol runner-up, David Archuleta. This album has an overwhelmingly positive message. I love that it's family-friendly with content that's safe for ears of all ages.

While it's nothing shockingly new or innovative, it has a great overall sound, catchy lyrics, and a varied set of songs. Archuleta showcases his vocal talent that fans of American Idol season eight grew to expect and anticipate. I definitely appreciated the wide range of songs. There is a good mix of upbeat pop songs and slower ballads.

My favorite has to be "Falling Stars," a soulful song of love lost. The song showcases Archuleta's vocal range. I also enjoyed the message of the song "Complain."

Cause I don’t always get everything I wanted
Doesn’t turn out just the way I thought it all should be
Baby, I can’t complain
No more wasting my time looking in the mirror
Wishing my life was a little bit clearer

If you're looking for something edgy, look elsewhere. It's not cutting edge, it's not Lady Gaga (thank goodness), but it is a highly enjoyable, optimistic offering from the teenage sensation.

Five Tips for Making Benefit Planning easier

It seems like every year around this time I get a huge packet of information in the mail from our insurance company. Sometimes with the information overload it can be hard to select the right plan, or even find enough time to sit down and read through the plethora of information. However, as money is often tight, selecting the proper benefit combination is crucial. It can dramatically affect your out of pocket costs and your monthly premiums.

1. Know what you need. Take a look at last year's medical expenses. How much did you spend? Did you meet your deductible? Evaluating whether or not your current plan met your needs is an important first step.

2. Know what you get. Some health plans include wellness benefits like discounted gym memberships or massages. Take advantage of these services! You're paying for them.

3. Know what's NOT covered. Just as it's important to know what you get with your plan, it's also important to know what types of things are not covered. I learned the hard way that some of my routine lab work was not considered routine by the insurance company and ended up having to pay $1000 out of pocket. Trust me - if I had known it was not covered, I would not have had it done. Good information to know.

4. Open an FSA. A flexible spending account is a great way to pay for your medical expenses. Most of the money in the FSA is exempt from taxes. You can even have your employer deduct it automatically. If you're going to be paying for your medical bills anyway, then you might as well take advantage of the tax-free benefits. (Just a note: starting in 2013 there will be a $2500 annual cap on FSA contributions)

5. Can you get paid to workout? Some insurance plans offer incentives for healthy lifestyles that include exercise and good nutrition. (After all, if you're healthier, they have to pay for fewer medical claims). It just might be the motivation you need to get off the couch and get moving.

Even though the information seems a bit overwhelming at times, there is certainly a huge benefit in understanding what your plan includes. Education helps you make informed decisions as to the best fit for your family. Everyone is different and so is each medical plan. Get the most for your money - plan ahead to devote a bit of time to choosing your health benefits. You can do it in less than an hour. It's definitely worth the investment.

KT Tunstall "Tiger Suite" CD - Review

Tiger Suit is the third studio album singer-songwriter KT Tunstall. This album features what she calls "Nature Techno," a blend of dance rhythms and organic instrumentation. The single "Fade Like a Shadow" has already become a Top 20 radio hit.

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the album. I gave it an honest try and listened straight through. To be honest there is only one song that I would add to my iPod playlist - "Lost." Most of the other songs simply did not appeal to me. Here's an example of some lyrics from the song "Glamour Puss:"

"Baby juggles fire in a blindfold
Riding in a motorcycle
Through a hula-hoop but it
Sounds like dust on your record
You're showing the pressure
Of doing loop-de-loop-de-loop."

I guess I'm just not quite hip enough. I don't envision this becoming one of my favorite albums. If you like Tunstall's previous CDs, this one might be up your alley. I tend to get annoyed by techno beats and abstract lyrics. Tiger Suit was not quite my cup of tea.

Fans of Tunstall may be interested to know that she will be on tour this Fall (10/31-12/1). She also has a website and Facebook Fan Page.

Masquerade - by Nancy Moser * Book Review

Charlotte Gleason was raised seldom hearing the word "no." Dora, on the other hand has been raised to serve the affluent Gleason family on their English estate. A trip to America to meet a wealthy, potential husband for Lottie offers both women the opportunity to embrace a whole new life.

In a switch reminiscent of The Prince and the Pauper, Lottie and Dora decide to trade places. Lottie hopes to avoid a loveless arranged marriage, and Dora gets the opportunity to live a life of luxury. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm a sucker for historical fiction, especially when it concerns fancy balls and high society. I think most of us still have dreams of Cinderella balls, intricate gowns, and elaborate multi-course dinners. The novel was a fun escape from the real world of watching Cinderella, wearing sweatpants, and reheating whatever happens to be in the freezer.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and was somewhat sad when the story had to end. If you enjoy seeing how the other half lives, or learning more about New York City in the 1880s, pick up Masquerade.

10 ideas for incorporating fun and play into your child’s daily activities.

When your child plays, they are doing more than stacking blocks or coloring inside (or outside) the lines. Each moment of play is building pathways and connections in the brain that they will carry with them for the rest of their life. Sound like a big task? Not if you take a little time to incorporate fun and play into your child's daily activities.

My little one is just over a year old. So, while a lot of our skills are still developing, I try to reinforce what he is learning as we go throughout our day.

1. "Where's the beef?" Ok, maybe not. But my little boy likes playing "Where's the duck?" Once you've read a children's book a thousand times, it's fun to look for new ways to enjoy looking through the pages. We try to look for a specific animal on the page to help build his vocabulary and recognition of the object's name.

2."Hide and Seek." Kids enjoy the thrill of discovery. Get on their level and join in a quick game of hide and seek. Make sure your hiding places are safe and age appropriate (hiding behind a pillow may be all you need to do to get a toddler giggling).

3. Play with your food. Uncooked macaroni and dried beans make excellent arts and craft items. You can talk about how things can have multiple uses. They can fill our tummies and help us share something beautiful with friends and family.

4. Sing. Sing a song. You don't have to be a grammy-award-winning artist to sing to your kids. Sing a song about putting on their shoes, or buttoning their coat. Any mundane task can be jazzed up when you add a melody.

5. Do you see what I see? This is a great game for keeping kids occupied at grocery stores or on trips. It's the classic game of "I Spy." At the grocery store you could say, "I see something yellow and yummy." I can guarantee you my son would quickly spot the "nanas."

6. What would you do? There are tons of fun books and movies for kids, but it's important to engage their mind, not just entertain them. It's fun to ask your kids, "what would YOU have done if you had super powers?" "Did you think they made a good choice when they decided to . . . what would you do instead?"

7. The alphabet game. It's a roadtrip classic. Locate letters of the alphabet on roadsigns and billboards starting with "a" and making your way through all of the letters of the alphabet. For a little one who is just learning their letters you can play a simplified version of the game and look for one certain letter anywhere. For example: "Ok, I want you to see where you can find the letter A on our way to the grocery store."

8. Cooking up fun. We've all got to eat. Why not include the kids in the prep work? Find safe and simple tasks for your kids to accomplish in the kitchen. Have them tear lettuce or stir the batter in the bowl. They will feel proud of their accomplishments and will be learning valuable skills to help them later in life.

9. Talk it up. I've heard of families that include the "Mad, Sad, and Glad" game as part of their family dinner time together. Each individual takes turns sharing about their day and telling something that made them mad, something that made them sad, and something that made them glad. It's a good conversation starter and is a healthy and fun way for kids to share how they are feeling (and to learn that grown-ups have feelings too).

10. Freeze. Tell your kiddos that you've just gotten word that an invisible blizzard is coming into town and at any moment it could strike. No matter where you are when you say "Freeze" everyone is to stop mid motion. When you say "Heat Wave," everyone goes back to normal. It's fun to keep them guessing. Who knows, a blizzard could strike during dinner, during bath time, or as your playing a family game together.

The most important play resource your child has is YOU! You don't have to have tons of cash or flashy electronic equipment. All you need is a willingness to spend a little time on their level. Look for the adventure and fun in your daily activities. Have fun and your kids will too!

"A Memory Between Us" by Sarah Sundin *Book Review

Lieutenant Ruth Doherty fiercely guards her heart against all prospective suitors, especially the proud and handsome Major Jack Novak. As a WWII nurse, Ruth faces marriage proposals and interested suitors on a daily basis. No one has been able to break through her defenses. Will Jack succeed?

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. You can tell that Sundin did her research. In fact, her great-uncle was an Air Force pilot who flew B-17s during the attack on Pearl Harbor and who also achieved many of the same feats the story's hero Jack Novak also attempts. The novel is rich in historical details, especially in regard to the details on flight and nursing. The characters were engaging and interesting. I easily read the entire book in a couple of days. There were times that it was hard to put down because I wanted to know what would happen next.

This book would be of particular interest to those who enjoy historical fiction set during World War II. The author brings the battles to life and enlightens the reader to the challenges faced by the hundreds of servicemen and women during the war. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the story interesting. A delightful read, I look forward to reading more of Sundin's work in the future. This is the second book in the Wings of Glory series.

What if there's more to this universe than meets the eye? What if there are gateways and pathways to other dimensions where people live their everyday lives oblivious to visitors. In this first book of the Bright Empires series, author Stephen Lawhead introduces us to Cosimo and his great-grandson Kit. These two adventurers are on a quest to recover the mysterious Skin Map which reveals the mysteries of the unseen worlds.

I really enjoyed this book. There is plenty of adventure and intrigue to keep me interested and involved. I did not care for the way the book ended. It left a TON of loose ends. Initially I didn't realize that this was the first book in the series. My first reaction was "You can't end a book that way!!" But I was relieved when I realized there was more to come. I am definitely looking forward to the release of the next book! I found the first one fascinating even if the ending was frustrating. I'm sure all my questions will be answered by the end of the trilogy.

I've read some of Lawhead's works before, principally the Song of Albion trilogy. If you've read his "ley" travel books before you'd be pretty familiar with his premise. I enjoy his writing style, and look forward to following these characters on their adventures.

For Time & Eternity by Allison Pittman * Book Review

Camilla is certain her parents must be wrong about the Mormon strangers camped near their family farm. After all, they have never met the handsome, charming, Nathan Fox. How could someone so kind be dangerous?

I loved, loved, loved this book. I literally read the whole thing in 24 hours (and that's saying something coming from a busy mom). I have always been fascinated by the beliefs of Mormons. It was interesting to see a glimpse into some controversial areas - primarily the issue of polygamy.

The book is set in the 1800s, before the Mormon church reversed its stance on plural marriage. I think Pittman did an excellent job of presenting the challenges and emotional impact of such a family state. As a wife, I can't even begin to imagine sharing my husband with another woman, let alone having her live with me under my roof. Pittman fleshed out these issues through the struggles of Camilla Deardon. I was impressed with the plot, drama, and emotional power of this book.\

The only thing I didn't like was the fact that I have to wait until NEXT YEAR to find out what happens next. This is the first book in the Sister Wife series, and I personally hope that there are many more to come.

The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews

"Every single thing you do matters." That's the message of Andy Andrew's latest release The Butterfly Effect. I remember hearing about the Butterfly Effect in one of my liberal arts classes in college. The thesis by Edward Lorenz proposes that a butterfly flapping its wings on one side of the globe could cause a hurricane on the other side of the planet. In essence, even the smallest movement can have significant implications.

This small 109 page book from Andrews applies the butterfly effect to human history. Using the story of Union soldier Joshua Chamberlain, Andrews demonstrates that human beings have the ability to have a ripple effect on future generations. If you're still living, you still have a purpose for being on earth.

Those who have read Andrew's book for Children, The Boy Who Changed the World, will also recognize the name of Norman Bourlag, who invented a grain that has been used to save the lives of millions who would have otherwise starved. We may not have supernatural gifts or abilities, but we do have the ability to influence and impact those around us. We may never live to see the impact of our legacy, but it will still carry on.

It is a quick and easy read, and like most of Andrews works, it is inspirational in nature. Although the butterfly effect premise could easily taken to the extreme (What if I was supposed to choose Turkey instead of Roast Beef today?), the message is true and good. We are on earth for a reason. God has a plan and purpose for our lives. We didn't get here by accident. Ordinary people can have an extraordinary impact. In fact, they might even change the world.

What if one little boy had the power to change the world? In this beautifully illustrated book written by Andy Andrews, we follow the story of several little boys each of whom had a part in changing the world.

The Boy Who Changed the World is a beautiful reminder of the influence one person can have on the life of another. We may not understand how our choices have the power to influence the next generation. This book was a pleasant reminder that even though the world faces enormous challenges, we have been placed on this earth to make a difference - even if it's only in the life of one other person. You never know - that one person may be the boy who changes the world.

Even though this book is geared for children, the story is valuable and relevant for individuals of all ages. We were all placed on this earth to serve a purpose. No decision, no effort is inconsequential. Even the smallest choice can hold the power to bring about tremendous change.

I also love the history this book covers. Although the story begins in the current age, the author leads the reader on a journey back in time to discover how they arrived at their current situation. Children will be able to recognize figures from history as part of the story.

I would definitely recommend this book to family and friends. A beautiful story. A great reminder. We all have the power to make a difference.

Ten Ways to Make Your Favorite Foods Healthier

I don’t know how it happened. Well, actually I do. Since the birth of my son last year that remaining layer of baby fat has refused to disappear, and I haven’t done much to help show it the door. It can be so frustrating to battle those pounds and also balance a busy life as a wife and mother. I’ve watched in dismay as the scale has gone from five to ten to now thirty pounds above my healthy weight goal. There are days I just want to throw in the towel, go grab a tub of cookie dough from the fridge, and just resign myself to the fact that things are never going to change. But I do have the power to make a difference. It’s not impossible to make healthy changes to my diet without forever surrendering my favorite treats and dishes. It’s all about healthy compromise. I know if I take these tips seriously, I will begin to see the change I’m so desperately looking for. Here are my ten tips for making my food healthier.

Select the proper portion size. If “Location, Location, Location” is the mantra for a good real estate investment, then “Portion, Portion, Portion” is a key to a good healthy weight. I can say with complete honesty that I often eat more than I need to in one sitting. Sometimes, it’s because it tastes good and for some reason I think that the tastiness of the food will disappear if I don’t cram it all into my face in one sitting. I forget that proper portion sizes mean that perhaps my favorite restaurant meal can feed me for two or three meals instead of just one. I can still enjoy tasty things when they are eaten in the proper amounts.
Season with herbs and spices instead of salt and butter. I’m guilty here. I was raised in the south. We are notorious for our oh so tasty, but not so good for you, buttery delights. Just ask Paula Dean. However, I am learning that you can add a wide variety of flavors to foods by taking advantage of fresh herbs and spices. Try a new curry or sprinkle some rosemary and garlic on your chicken breast. You’ll be surprised at the wide assortment of flavors you can get for a minimal amount of calories.
Steam your veggies. Maybe you thought steam was only good for facials and cleaning. Did you know that steaming your vegetables is a great way to prepare your side dishes? There are a wide variety of steamers on the market. Everything from microwavable Ziploc bags to high tech electric contraptions. The key is to cook your vegetables in such a way that they maintain the highest level of nutrients. Steaming allows you to enjoy crisp tasty veggies, a great low cal alternative to high fat sides.
Use Applesauce instead of oil when baking a cake. You can cut out some of the extra fat and calories and you add in an extra dose of fruit. It’s a pretty good trade off. The cake still remains tasty and moist. Nobody has to know your secret.
Sneak some veggies in while your kids aren’t looking. Fortunately, my one-year-old is not old enough to verbally protest the peas I put on his plate (for now he just throws them on the floor), but I know a day is coming when vegetables become the evil enemy, and I become the evil tyrant for forcing them to be eaten. There are clever ways to sneak veggies into your diet without your kids (or husband) noticing. Cookbooks like Deceptively Delicious offer tips to sneak those extra vitamins and minerals into favorites like chicken nuggets and brownies.
Make smoothies instead of milkshakes. I enjoy the cool tastiness of a milkshake or malt, but I’m often shocked into reality when I notice how calorie-laden they are. Fruit smoothies mimic the cold, refreshing nature of milkshake, while supplying vitamins and minerals instead of guilt.
Cut back on the cheese. Now to a cheese lover like me, this statement is almost blasphemous. In my opinion cheese is the ambrosia of the gods. Ok, maybe that’s a bit of overkill, but it is very good. I’m learning that I can still enjoy the flavor of cheese without overloading my plate with it. A few sprinkles on top of a taco are sufficient. I don’t have to turn my taco into a cheese volcano.
Bake don’t fry. Yeah, yeah. You love your fried chicken, your French fries, and your deep fried funnel cakes. Don’t we all. But there are some great recipes online and in cookbooks for making mock friend chicken and oven backed fries. You can get a tasty crispy chicken by coating the breast in panko bread crumbs or cornflakes. You can even make healthy sweet potato fries in your oven.
Make an egg white omelet instead of using the whole egg. It may take a few extra eggs, but you can get the tasty protein of an egg while limiting cholesterol. Some recipes even offer tips on cooking with egg whites or egg substitutes.
Enjoy a few vegetarian meals. When I got married I learned that it’s not a meal unless it includes meat. Until that point I was content with the occasional bowl of rice and veggies, or plain pasta with olives and tomatoes. I’ve learned that removing the meat from a few meals helps cut back on the fat and calories, but if, like in my family, cutting out meat is not an option, I can substitute lean healthier meats like chicken and fish into my diet. I often use ground turkey instead of ground beef in dishes like tacos, spaghetti, and soups. It’s hard to tell the difference when it’s covered in spices and sauces.

It’s hard to change your diet overnight, but there are a few simple steps you can take to help create a healthier you (without eliminating flavor and taste).

Blogger Burnout

Have you ever had times in your life when you were doing a ton of things, but you weren't doing many of them well? The ole cliche "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind. You may have noticed a decrease in the amount of posts and giveaways in the last couple weeks. Honest answer - I'm pooped, my house is a dirty mess, and I keep adding tons of additional responsibilities on top of my already busy life as a wife and mother. Now don't get me wrong - they are all things I enjoy (volunteering at my church, working with my Pampered Chef business, spending time with my MOPS group), but I've been running a million miles a minute for the last couple weeks and I needed a little bit of a breather, and I'm afraid Mommy's Minute has been an easier place to cut back.

I hope you'll stick with me. I will continue to do my best to round up some great reviews and giveaways, but there may be a few dry spells here and there. It takes a lot of work to review products and promote giveaways, and although I absolutely LOVE doing it, my family needs to come first. I've been neglecting my family at times to help build Mommy's Minute into a site I hope you enjoy visiting.

I'm a real mom - with real time constraints. Most of my days are spent calming a toddler, wiping boogers, and figuring out what's for dinner. I wanted to let you know that you guys are important to me. I am so blessed to have gotten to know some of you guys through forums, and e-mails. I am so thankful that God has given me a "voice" and a channel to communicate my struggles and His strength.
